Description

I know the chances Phaneuf would come to MTL are low due to 18-team NTC....but...here's the scenario...

Habs UFA's need to move for some future assets. Kings close enough to playoffs to make a run at it, but need an upgrade lower on D and a bit more scoring/speed.
Montreal may buy Phaneuf out after a year, depending where they are in their rebuild.

The fun part for me is what to do with the draft picks. Let's say Montreal is picking at #5 with their own pick and #18 with the Kings pick in 2019. I'd take Bowen Byram (LHD from WHL) and Antonni Honka (RHD from Finland) if they were available and get them in the prospect pipeline to start developing. Takes 3-4 years to develop most young defensemen to NHL level.

Additional Details:

Kings gain about $5.25M in cap space for next couple seasons, without losing any top prospects or key roster players. Their bottom pair D is more effective for playoff run, Benn can play LD or RD and is certainly better than Phaneuf at this point. Shaw and Byron add forward depth and speed for the playoffs.

Essentially the Habs take on last 2 years of Phaneuf contract at $5.25M per year. Pearson is a reasonable and experienced LW option for a few years as young guys mature. Key piece is the extra draft pick.

Not a Phaneuf fan ?? Not even for 1 year? I have to admit the left side D looks just awful. But the idea is to be better 2-3 years from now not next year

No incentive at all for Kings to do this. Better ways for them to clear cap space than this.
