Description
The Leafs need a good RD who can exit the zone with possession and play good defence. Jeff Petry is a good RD who can exit the zone with possession and play good defence. Habs get a good, NHL ready prospect at a position of weakness and a couple of picks to go with a guy the Leafs are going to have trouble keeping but could see decent playing time on a Habs team starved for RHDs. Leafs can probably move Zaitsev in order to keep their core.

Montreal would have to retain salary, since TO won't be able to afford that hit next season once Marner and Matthews sign.

Petry's more than a solid #3, but the market value for good players last offseason was... unimpressive. Borgman was really strong in the NHL last year, especially when Toronto unshackled him from Polak. He's almost certianly gonna be at least a #3 defenceman, and the pick might be something too. IMO it's a better return than Skinner or ROR got. MB also seems to think Petry is substantially worse than Weber, so he's not gonna ask for full price most likely. Habs aren't really figuring to get anything out of him by keeping him, he's 30 and the team's rebuilding.

The team isn't rebuilding. The team is retooling. The strong vets that deserve to stay here will stay here. Gallagher + Price + Weber + Petry are the strong 4
