Each team could use a shake up. New Jersey has a much younger team and could be happy transitioning to Kinkaid as #1G. STL has no clear direction where to go unless they get moving quickly. Their defense and forwards are in their prime. Some experts picked them to win the Cup this season. They're 28th overall with no excuses. Trading some futures for a goalie could send a signal to their players that it's time to get to work? Or it could just do nothing at all for them, and New Jersey gets a free pick and a prospect, plus salary cap relief at backup goalie. Looks win-win to me.
Basically, this is in response to a conversation that started with St. Louis fans asking the price on Bobrovsky, Holtby, Price, and a bunch of other starting goalies on playoff teams, and being told it wasn't happening. NJ saying it doesn't need to make a change in net is the best response they're getting. Dallas and LA likely say the same thing, which keeps prices fairly low, but it's still a chance to add a pick and a prospect for about nothing, a year ahead of a potential lockout.
