Description

Put a lot of thinking into trade partners for a Doughty trade lately, and my mind keeps coming back to Colorado as a potential partner. It makes sense somewhat in my mind. Adding Doughty would give the Avs a mighty 3 punch combo on the right side joining Barrie and Johnson, and Colorado has no shortage of young guys and picks to give up.

Even with Doughty's 11 million dollar extension coming into effect next season, the Avs still have a fair chunk of cap space (using CapFreindly's numbers for this assumption) to resign key guys like Rantanen, Kerfoot and Varly, as well as any other needed supporting characters.

Doughty is an elite defenceman who automatically makes the Avs legit cup contenders, so they would be fools not to consider parting ways with a prospect or two if they thought they could land him. The combined careers of Girard and Makar are unlikely to ever match Doughty's. However, I can see the Avs refusing to pass up Ottawa's first, especially now that the Sens are sinking down the standings to where we thought they would be after their surprising start. The Avs have a lot of promising young players in their system so they could part with a few to get an elite player without leaving their cupboards dry.
