Description
I know its an overpay for Martinez but the thought is by giving up higher picks LA retains half his salary and jump start the restucture that is probably going to start very soon. The leafs have prospect depth in all areas they are trading from so seeing they have not lost a prospect in their top 5 they can absorb the loss of picks and gives them a vet dman with experience playing on the Right like Hainsey that can comfortably be a stop gap while Sandin, Liljegren develop. This also gives the ability to put Zaitsev back in his natural role of puck moving dman by having a more all round player like Dermott being his partner. Also, once nylander is signed which i really didn't think would happen but it looks as if he finally realizes that he wasn't going to see 8 million from the leafs at this point in his development they will have rendundecies and issues with waivers so by trading a solid 2way wing who does have the upside to be a solid 2 line player and 2 dman that odds are won't play important min or games they are not losing more irreplaceable players due to skill and depth in those areas to waivers.

I would want something close to Manson with that package.. 1st and 2nd are great picks, Borgman is just about to jump into NHL and is swedish rookie of the year winner which was only done by great guys. Also Brown would be very good in LA.

Brown and 2nd for Martinez, sure but not that package.

Like i said the point of the overpay was to get him at 2 million so that next year we are less likely to have to trade Kap or Johnsson due to lack of space. So yes your right without the retaining of salary brown and a 2nd should be enough by giving up the 1st which really could be conditional on the leafs making the cup final the leafs have the ability to be dominat for next year as well. I like Borgman but with Rosen, Dermott, and Reilly on the left and with this trade next year they will have Martinez, Zaitsev, and Oz they will be sound on the d.
