Description
I looked at a lot of Jets 2019-2020 proposals, and most people who address the blueline either say to trade Trouba or move on from Myers. If I were the Jets, however, I would actually move Byfuglien. If the Jets want to keep their window to compete for a cup open for a long period of time, I would try to keep the younger, talented players. Byfuglien will be 34 in March, and you never know when his game will dip. He still has 2 years left on his contract, and is still valuable. I think they could grab a nice return from someone.

Notes:
1. I used NJD as an example. If this were a top 5 pick, I would understand NJD not wanting to move it. But if NJD improves and they end up with the 13th or 14th overall, maybe they would do this deal.

2. MTL fans- I think this is a very fair deal. Perreault will help on the offensive end, and you only have Kulikov for a year.

3. Lowry was moved for cap compliance. I know someone reported that the cap next year could be as much as $83 million, but last year the range was $78-82 million, and look what happened.

4. All trades are made right before or at the 2019 draft.

5. If Tanev should cost more, you can replace him on the open market with ease.

I think the NJD trade is fair, although I don't know how high Jersey is on Santini so it might need some tweaking. Obviously the 1st would need to be protected or just swapped to 2020.
Lowry might fetch as much as a 2nd, if he goes to a contender looking for centre depth for a run, think Plekanec last season.
MTL is in the top half of the league in GF, with Weber only just getting back so they aren't desperate for help offensively. Even if Kulikov is only for 1 season you want MTL to pay to take on about 7 million in cap, and waste 2 roster spots, for a 6/7 d-man, LHD on top of that, and a 4th line LW. Winnipeg would need to add something of value , like they did when they moved Mason.

All of these trades would be made at the draft, so the devils trade would not be protected; if the devils are a mid round pick and they turn it around they may opt to do the deal.

I still think MTL would benefit from this move, and may need a 6/7 defenseman next year. Again, it's next season we are talking about, not this one. Why would they not want Perreault for only a year of kulikov? They are still going to have tons of cap space. Also, MTL was just an example; there are other teams you could find to work this sort of deal with (CBJ if and when panarin leaves; FLA if they move on from Petrovic and Kiselevich; maybe OTT if perreault and kulikov do not list the Sens on a no trade list, because they may need bodies). MTL just had the cap space to do it, so I chose them.

The lowry trade was a conservative estimate; did not want anyone yelling at me and thinking I am crazy.

My whole point is, Byfuglien is great but is getting older. Keep the window open. Keep the younger players and get return on Byfuglien's value while you still can.

NJD is a solid deal then.
6/7 dmen can be picked up infree agency much cheaper than Kulikov, unless he picks up his game Winnipeg might just have to eat the last year of his deal. MTL specifically wouldn't want Perreault for 1 year of Kulikov because he would be an overpaid 4th liner do to their LW being full of guys as good, but cheaper, or better than him. A team that is weak at LW might trade those picks for him, but probably not with Kulikov attached, it's a rather significant cap hit to absorb for little gain.
Decent shutdown C get more than they probably should, especially at the TDL.
A Byfuglien trade makes sense, but only if Trouba can be locked up long term like you have on here.

The jets don't want to want to trade Trouba and they dont want to lose Myers to free agency. But the reality is that Trouba might not be willing to sign long term in Winnipeg, he unfortunately wants to play in the states. And Myers might just demand too much in free agency, and he seems to be quite injury prone.

I've always believed that Trouba is the wrong one to trade. Myers or Byfuglien should go, and in this scenario, that Byfuglien trade is fair. All the trades and most contracts seam reasonable to me. I could see Connor asking for more than $6m per year on a long-term, so maybe a bridge deal is worked out until he proves his full worth and Winnipeg has the money.
