I like the numbers on Lee, but I'd rather give Nelson that 2 year deal as opposed to a 35 year old center.

Also no reason to re-sign Filp or go after Varlamov at 6mil.

Even at 35 years old, Eric Staal is an pretty big upgrade over Nelson. Why Sign Nelson who will get more than 5 million (more like 5.5 or 6) and term? Islanders still need a true number one center. they do not have it in the line up (no Barzal is not a true number 1 center) they do not have it in the minors/prospect pool, so why commit to a guy for a long term who also isn't that guy? would be a poor roster management strategy.

There is a very good reason to sign Varlomov. Besides him being a quality starting caliber goaltender, something this team hasn't had since Nabakov, he is very tight with Sorokin. Sorokin will be in the fold for the 2020 season and it would amazing for his development and acclimation to the league to have not only another Russian Goalie, but someone he trusts and is close to.

As for Filp: why not sign him? he has clear chemistry with Komarov, he's well liked in the locker room (as has been the case everywhere) anyone who's played on that line w him has played well, he's reliable in all 3 zones, he handles the top line match ups and he's 50% face off guy.
