So what exactly are paying our high end back up goalie, high end defensive prospect, and 1st round pick for? Hjalmarsson has been brutal all year, Duclair really isn't that good, and Wedgewood is a back up at best. Besides getting rid of Orpik's contract, theres nothing in this for Washington.

We need to keep as many of our draft picks as possible. Our farm system lacks depth, so trading two high picks and a good prospect in a “go for it” effort makes ZERO sense. I understand that it’s difficult for Caps fans to realize that this isn’t a Cup contending year for us, but we have to retool. That means replenishing the prospect pool. If we hit on some of our picks this year, maybe next year we go for it again. But not now

it would also help if the caps could sign a few college kids like the pens and njd have hit homers with

Hjalmarsson is a mojor upgrade to orpik

grub our high end backup goalie could get us a 2nd and a non nhl prospect .........

and a high end d prospect that couldnt make this team for the next 5 years.........

orlov
djoo
luca
thats the lhd for the next few years

nisk
carlson
bowey
hobbs

thats the rhd for the next few years

that top d prospect**** right?

Hjalmarsson is on a terrible team he is a 3x champ with a ton of upside

Duclair is a solid player going threw a rough patch kind like bura goat who currently is on the 4th line............but you have no clue what a goalie value is in the nhl

As far as the college prospects go, yeah it’d be nice to sign someone like a Will Butcher or Alex Kerfoot, but it’s not something we can rely on. Those are just bonuses to the prospect pool. All the work needs to be done through the draft and investing time into their development.

And I tend to be in the middle of the second topic. While adding Hjalmarsson would be nice, we’re at a point where picks and prospects are extremely valuable to us. No way we can take even more from that. Duclair had a good rookie season, but he isn’t a very good player. And if goalie value was so high, we would’ve already traded Grubauer for that top four defenseman. But he’s here still, so there are obviously no takers
