Three stars for giving Tavares a real valuation. I've seen a lot of $8M contract offers. He's the hottest commodity in a decade. He'll command big dollars.

Until then, Habs are one of 3 or 4 teams with a ready-made cap situation that works. They'll take a legit shot at him if he makes it to July 1 as a UFA. Even if he signs elsewhere, other teams will have to re-engineer their caps, at which point Montreal would be in a fine position to get some good players for cheap.

That's the worse trade ever for Arizona, 1 year on Patches contract for young players and a top 10 pick. Not much flexible in the cap with so many players making so much (some unjustified.).

So many people link Tavares to MTL. The temptation is there because we have the cap space and a massive need for a #1 Centre but many teams will offer him all kinds of money. Because there is such a lack of free agent Centres, Tavares is in the drivers seat. I think there are only 3 free agent Centres worth pursuing in terms of age, money and productivity. For example do you go after a Centre that has similar points than your current roster?
