Wouldn't CBJ, be a lot better if they just signed DeHaan for 5m, kept their picks, and let Montreal keep the inferior Alzner at 4.6? Similar situation in the Florida deal. The reason why trading for picks is so difficult, especially for higher mid to higher cap players with longer term.

Any team we trade Alzner to will likely ask us to retain some salary. If we are going through a rebuild with some younger players (that have lower end salaries), I could see the Habs agreeing to that. Taking 1-1.5M$ hit over the next 4 years wouldn't be to big of a deal. He's currenlty a 4.625M$ cap hit. Bringing that closer to 3M$ might be more attractive to other teams. Should he bounce back with that team and they look to flip him again, that would be a quality asset to take a gamble on.
