Eric Francis Flames Karlsson Proposal

Created by: ekpaul87
Team: 2017-18 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 19, 2018

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/calgary-flames-make-offer-erik-karlsson/

Eric Francis wrote an article on if the Flames should make an offer for Karlsson. It's not anywhere near enough in my opinion so I will add to it here to try to balance it out. I still don't think there's any chance of it happening, but Calgary has a good stock of potential assets to pull it off.

*Created Frolik at $2M to represent his salary net of LTIR after he misses 25ish games.

Additional Details:
Francis suggested Gillies, Andersson, and Fox in exchange for Karlsson. I don't think Ottawa would even look at that, so I have added Hamonic and Dube to try to balance it out.

Still have Parsons, Valimaki, Kylington, etc. but no 1st or 2nd this year, which means this would be a huge risk robbing the cupboard like this. I think it's a good offer though.

By the way, I thought you were using Karlsson's full name in the title lmao: "Erik Francis Flames Karlsson" would be the most badass name in the world haha.

Hahaha that would be awesome!

I agree that it would be a risk to use that many, but if they are smart about depth UFA signings, they should be able to keep good depth. Would probably need to move Stone this summer, which is fine.

They would also have Stajan off the books this summer and Brouwer off next summer, so combined with the cap going up, you could potentially even see some space to keep Karlsson (unlikely but possible).

I also think if Valimaki emerges, you could move Brodie to restock the cupboards a bit more.

I was very curious about Francis's take on this as well. However I think this is way too much, maybe what is considered the amount you would need to get Karlsson by some, but we lose too much here on the future and no guarantee he stays with us after the contract is up. If you could get him to sing a reasonable extension and then trade away one of the top six for a package of picks or forward prospects to make up for all those going to Ottawa, that might change my mind. In two years we have to resign Karlsson for a probable monster contract along with Bennet, Ferland, Tkachuck, Mangiapane, not to mention whatever is going to happen with Goalies and such. I think the D is coming on strong and finally starting to play like they look on paper. With Andersson, Valimaki, Kylington, Fox, Kulak, Mattsson, Lindstrom, all looking good respectfully, our D is looking amazing for the next 5+ years. I would stay well away from this Karlsson show and focus on depth and scoring up front on the bottom 6, some more playoff experience.....and please someone take Lazar and Brouwer away!

I tend to agree with you that it's not needed. If the Sens would do it for what Francis suggested (Fox, Gillies, Andersson) I think that would be a good move, followed by dealing Stone or Hamonic to clear up some space and bring back some prospects.

I think if you take just Dube out, it still could make sense for the Flames, as it would give them a good shot at winning a Cup in the next two years before Karlsson's contract expires.

I know Karlsson is an incredible player but any deal like this where you're losing that much of your future for one player and he's going to handicap your salary cap for the next 8 years.. you have to wonder if that's really worth it. And for me it isn't.

Too much quantity, not enough quality. Ottawa is giving up a generational defencemen. Maybe Haminoc, Dube and Tkachuk. or a straight swap for Johnny sloppy. Just because of what other teams would offer. you guys are not getting Karlsson.
