How To Fix The Oilers

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. Either Russell or Lucic needs to be moved out. Use a decent prospect and a small retention to make it happen, and bring back a winger who can chip in a few goals without costing a lot.

2. Buffalo desperately needs defensemen (as they have a lot of offensive forward prospects), so add a couple of extra picks to swap draft spots where they can take a Dman and Edmonton can get the scoring LW they need.

3. Use RNH to address the lack of talent on the wings, while replacing an average 3rd line centre. Alternatively, Strome could be moved to 3C and get back another winger.

4. Re-sign Nurse long term, similar to Klefbom/Larsson.

5. Let the talented kids on ELCs get in the lineup and develop by playing key minutes with star players. Pulijujarvi, Yamamoto and Zadina/Tkachuk should all be impactful players.

This might not make the Oilers all the way better by next year, but it would fix the long term trajectory significantly from the mistakes that have been made recently.

    other teams don't take on cap dumps without sending money back to the "offending" team. it is really is a fruitless exercise. And lucic has a mmc. he's yours. (and mine)

    Luckily not mine, I'm a Calgary guy, was just trying out some ideas for Edmonton.

    ekpaul87, sorry I didn't mean disrespecthappy. every team has some bad contracts, but when they are attached to nmcs, it's really a bad situation. look at the rangers and their dead money, buyout of girardi, staal at 5.7m and Lundqvist the highest paid goalie by a lot. it's coming back to haunt. them.

    Wait, why are we trading up, I’d be more than happy to select Boqvist, Bouchard, Wahlstrom at 6, no need to poor assets to move up to #3.

    I’d take the Lucic trade in a second, but unfornately, he doesn’t move unless he waives his clauses and why would he waive to go to Arizona..

    I like Val Filppula at 3rd line C, but I think if we traded for Pageau, he would be it.

    I’d also take that Sens trade, idk if they would though.

    Sorry, meant to have Pageau as 3C and Filppula as 4C. I think that deal makes sense for the Sens. They save a few million dollars and really strengthen their centre depth with Duchene-RNH-Brassard. It would enable them to move one of those guys if they want to.

    My reasoning on moving up is that the Oilers top 4 D is pretty well locked in for several years, but there's a gap on LW. Adding a sniper like Zadina or Tkachuk to play beside McDavid or Draisaitl would make those lines nearly unstoppable. When you have two lines like that, it creates major matchup problems for opponents.

    With Lucic, generally when a team doesn't want a guy there, he becomes willing to waive his NMC. I think in his case, living in Arizona is a pretty nice lifestyle, and there are much worse places to go to, especially if they end up with Dahlin.
