They save $14 million despite retaining and taking on Brouwer's contract. That's huge money saved.

They can save more by not taking on his contract. Essentially, you'll have him making 6.5 mill to be on your 4th line. No thanks.

Nobody is going to take on Ryan's $30 million over 4 year contract without sending some money back.

Sens are rebuilding. Overpaying Brouwer for a couple years isn't going to bother them when the result is a $14 million savings.

I agree, if I was Ottawa I would definitely not detract from Karlsson's value by including Ryan in the deal.

Also, Vegas and Arizona will not take on Ryan's contract unless there is something in it for them.

1. Sending some money back and having Ryan retained to a palatable cap hit
2. Receiving prospects and picks

Those are the only two ways a team takes on Ryan's contract IMO. Seeing that Ottawa is now rebuilding, they will likely want to hold on to their prospects and picks.
