Zaitsev Upgrade in 2018-19 (because everyone is trading him today)

Created by: TML_GM
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 28, 2018
Published: Feb. 28, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Forgot to up the cap, so add another 3-5 million in cap space.

Minnesota might want more, but without flipping Gardiner for someone more defensive-minded on the backend, it looked dicey. Minnesota might want more offense from the backend and hometown boy Gardiner would likely sign long term.

Carolina is getting long term, cost-effective stability on their backend. They already have players signed long-term that have surpassed Faulk and they likely can't afford him long term. They also get a decent prospect, some late picks and a possible long-term starting goalie solution, because Darling is hot garbage.

If the Leafs want to have no performance bonus carry in 2019/18, the 4m PF from 2018/19 and Horton's 5.25 on the opening day roster, so really there isn't as much cap you think.
You say Faulk has been surpassed by other Canes Dmen, then is he such as bargain for the Leafs?

Leafs don't need either Nash... maybe Riley... Hortons contract has to be on the books like Pal said, Carlson will want more, where's Aaltonen?

As for the trades, I wouldn't even do Faulk for Zaitsev straight up... its addressing a weakness to take care of a weekness... Gardiner for Faulk straight up might be a thing to look into. We can throw in a forward prospect for a pick if they want. Definitely not trading all that for 1/2 years of Faulk...

Good ideas I guess but bad value.

One RHD and the team would be improved a lot for next year. I like the Zaitsev-Faulk idea, though giving a first round pick on top is a little too much. I would offer Vancouver Zaitsev for Tanev, too.

You can save cap by avoiding Nash and not resigning Komarov. Leivo, Johnsson (and possibly Grundstrom) should be integrated in the lineup.
