Wait.... Just hear me out... Shea Weber.

Description
I think that the Caps won the last two President's trophies and that's as much reason as any team gets to keep its coaching staff around. At the same time, they're faced with a salary cap crunch this year, and could gain cap space by trading the tail ends of Orpik's and Niskanen's contracts (with $22M remaining) for a more expensive player who is already quite familiar with Trotz' ideas on how to play defense. Montreal is then able to easily flip Orpik and Niskanen at the deadline for picks, after paying each one a bit less than $4M. The Caps are stuck with an overpaid, aging Shea Weber, at a huge cap hit, but his actual salary declines quickly, so after a couple years he's cheapish to buy out, and Nashville magically gets a lot of the cap penalty when that happens... https://www.capfriendly.com/players/shea-weber If Carlson is ready for a top pairing role, then Weber could be a really solid 2RHD. The total cost is about the same as keeping Orpik and Niskanen, and the value for Washington might be slightly better, assuming Orpik declines next year, and assuming that the Caps can't keep both Carlson and Grubauer without making moves.

  3. 2021 4th round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Weber is 32, with $30M remaining on his contract over 7 more years with an 8M cap hit, but that's 2m of cap space this year for Washington to keep Grubauer and Carlson. Montreal currently owes $30M to a defensemen unlikely to still be any good by the time the Habs are good. They can easily flip Orpik at the deadline on an expiring contract, for a late pick, and trade Niskanen at the deadline next year. This leaves them paying less than $15M for veteran experience they don't need on defense, instead of $30M, so they throw in a couple picks.
MTL
  1. Niskanen, Matt
  2. Orpik, Brooks
Additional Details:
Orpik and Niskanen are 37 and 31. Niskanen is about as good as Weber. Orpik isn't. More importantly for Montreal, none of the three figure into their rebuild plans, long term. Weber has already been around to mentor Petry, Juulsen, Mete, etc. for a year. They could learn different things from different teachers.

Montreal could get a heck of a lot more for Weber. Niskanen and Orpik aren’t going to help Montreal now or in a rebuild, if you throw in picks and prospects and you might be on to something.

Eli, you show have will get contrasting comments with this post. Give you credit, in most Weber trades, most Canadian fans only want futures and don't want to take any cap hit back. At least for three years, the trade you proposed the cap hit is close. I don't know why the Habs don't do it as they then would a whole lotta cap flexibility after 3 years and Weber will be on someones's payroll for another 5 years past that. Maybe the Habs don't give up the picks either as you proposed. But I think this type of trade that you proposed has merit.

Okay, fair enough, but Weber's recovering from an injury. Most years he's better than Niskanen. So what if this year he starts ten percent more of his shifts in the offensive zone, but only a 5% corsi to show for it. So what if he only has ten even strength points to Niskanen's 22. He used to be a perennial Norris contender, and he played his best years under Trotz. I think the Caps accept.

Y'all are undervaluing Matt Niskanen. Nisk starts 10% more of his shifts behind the red line than Weber and has 12 more even strength points this year. Stick him on Montreal's power play and it couldn't get worse. It might actually improve because they'll have the puck more of the time. Weber throws his weight around and has an epic slap shot. Niskanen just gets things done quietly. He's a really nice guy to play against until the playoffs. Just gets the puck away and gets it up ice so his teammates can score. Weber has turned into more of a power play specialist. This is a cap dump for Washington, no more, no less. Niskanen is better, younger, and cheaper than Weber, but has fewer years left on his contract and Weber will eventually be cheaper, plus Montreal, while rebuilding, likely has space to take on Orpik's contract to start the season.

Maybe the Caps throw in some mid-round picks for window-dressing, but they're already losing this trade, straight up, if it's Niskanen for Weber, and one year of Orpik at 5.5M is starting to look reasonable. If Montreal needs picks and prospects, they'll have a much easier time getting them at the trade deadline for the moderate cap hits and short terms remaining on Orpik's and Niskanen's deals than trying to trade seven more years of Weber at 8M elsewhere.

The only reason this doesn't happen is because casual fans like y'all don't known Niskanen's name, but they remember Weber's past achievements, so Weber on the ice is almost as exciting to watch as an actual winning team.

Incidentally, that's also the main reason Washington makes this trade.

Niskanen is one year younger then Weber. One year. He’s a good underrated defenseman. Weber is an elite defenseman having a bad year due to a foot injury and still producing way more than Niskanen despite being on a much worse team. Weber can also be bought out towards the end of his contract and Nashville would be responsible for the majority of it. Either way Weber is still an top defenseman in the league and Niskanen although good will never be comparable.

Its much harder to play against weber offensively and defensively then Niskanen. Nobody said Niskanen was bad, but theres no way he is valuable enough that the habs not only take on orpiks contract but also have to give away a 2nd and 4th

Niskanen has more points at even strength this year than Weber has total.

Then how come he hasn't won at least one playoff round in all of the last five seasons, while Orpik and Niskanen have?

I think the Caps consider this trade because Orlov and Carlson can be an effective top pair, and Weber can probably teach their two outstanding rookie defensemen some things about offense that neither of their previous mentors could show them, but it's a salary cap motivated trade. Arguing that Weber is better than Niskanen just invites the question of how far he got in the playoffs with Nashville.

Niskanen has played twice as many games this year why are you comparing totals?? You could argue that Washington has consistently underperformed more than any other team in recent history in the playoffs so by your logic what does that make Niskanen and Orpik? Give ur balls a tug bud Weber’s way better.
