Vancouver Rebuild 1st Attempt

Created by: FryesLeapMaine

Description
Vancouver is in pretty rough shape right now. They have prime aged defenders with minimal years left on their deals.

The premise of this mock was to move said players for honest mid round picks in order to acquire a couple young NHLers. I went for picks because I think Vancouver is closer to the best in the league at drafting than a lot of other teams. The exception was Carolina who I think highly of in terms of drafting prospects.

The assembled product definitely leans towards tanking on purpose, putting in several younger players to totally remodel the team.

As for the UFA's signed: RW Rick Nash is old, but he's at least an entertaining player to watch. If he costs 1M less than Eriksson at 1year shorter term then I think Vancouver should do it if only to sell more tickets. Komarov is a modest player, but he'd bring a physical edge to the 4th line and he's capable of being a 3rd liner if injuries occur. Sbisa is probably an afterthought for most teams, but I think he'd make a good 7th defender if Fleury falters. He's paid 2M to attract him but also to stay above the floor and it's gotta be on a 1 year pact.

These players traded might be worth a bit more, but I didn't want to make a thread of overvaluing everyone and given the opposition terrible deals. I will adjust the mock if I get more than one person saying the same thing and no-one saying the opposite.

1.
VAN
  1. Bogosian, Zach
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (SJS)
  3. 2019 2nd round pick (BUF)
  4. 2021 3rd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Vancouver takes on Bogosian to stick him on the 3rd pair during 2 tanking years. If anything he helps them get a higher pick. They have drafted pretty well, so the 3 picks could amount to something good.
BUF
  1. Tanev, Christopher
Additional Details:
Buffalo needs defenseman help badly. They get to upgrade to Tanev as well as dump Bogosian's mammoth contract without surrendering a 1st round pick.
2.
VAN
  1. Cizikas, Casey
  2. 2019 2nd round pick (CGY)
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Vancouver acquires more mid rounders for a defender and this isn't the last one they will be selling in this mock. Cizikas can play 3rd C for a tanking team imo.... he's not bad enough to hurt ticket sales.
NYI
  1. Edler, Alexander
Additional Details:
The Islanders could face the Nightmare scenario of losing De Haan, Hickey and Davidsson as UFAs. Edler could be a decent option for them if they missed out on other UFAs. They also get to dump Cizikas and his big contract for a bottom 6 player.
3.
VAN
  1. Fleury, Haydn
  2. Kuokkanen, Janne
Additional Details:
Vancouver gets two good prospects, one of which is NHL ready. Kuokkanen could be a 2nd line C if he develops well. Fleury has a way to go, but he can play in the NHL on the 3rd pair.
CAR
  1. Gagner, Sam
  2. Hutton, Ben
Additional Details:
I like Lindholm better at RW than C. That leaves Staal and Rask as their primary Centers. Gagner would be a great scoring 3rd C behind them. Hutton is more experienced than Fleury and is better suited to be on the team closer to the playoffs which is Carolina.
4.
VAN
  1. 2019 2nd round pick (OTT)
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (OTT)
OTT
  1. Del Zotto, Michael
Additional Details:
Ottawa has practically nothing aside from Chabot at LHD. Claesson, Harpur and Borowiecki all seem like #6 defenders. Ottawa should probably sell EK Hoffman and Duchene, but if they decide to try for the playoffs Del Zotto would be a good fit if they strike out in free agency.

I don't think the sens need Del Zotto. on the left side they have a top pairing guy in Chabot,a 2nd/3rd pairing guy with great chemistry with Karlsson in Claesson. a guy who has shattered all expectations since arriving in Wolanin. keep Borowiecki as your 7th D, and Trade Harpur for a bag of pucks.

who's the other LHD? You mention Chabot as top pair (I agree) and Claesson as another D (possible option) but who's the other top 6 d if Borowiecki is the #7 (I agree)? Seems like the team is short one player. Are you saying the guy who's played 8 games is an option?

I think he's NHL ready for sure. Honestly I'd be looking to upgrade on the right side. Ideally I'd be looking to get Chris Tanev and rolling Claesson-Karlsson Chabot-Tanev Wolanin-Wideman/Jaros
