Faster, Younger, Better (AZ, NJ, BUF, CGY)

Team: 2018-19 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 1, 2018
Published: May 3, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Habs go all-in on Tavares (note, he's the highest paid player in the league under this, but there's 24 players on the roster and still $1M+ more cap if needed).

Assumes Habs pick either Zadina or Tkachuk, who are returned for another year of development.

Devils look to build on 2018 success with low-risk move.

Buffalo saves $2M on cap for similar talent, with more versatility.

Calgary cuts losses on Bennett, who needs a reboot. Byron and Carr add some solid depth.

BUF passes. Samson has more years of cost control and I think is better

That is a close one. almost 2 year difference in age, very similar outputs, I think I would pass, stay with the devil I have and not the devil I do not know.

I would not trade Reinhart if I was the Sabres.

    So sweeten the pot.....?

Here's the thing: Buffalo has $6.1 in cap space, which will go up by, let's say $4M. Poulliot, Gorges and Chad Johnson are out, freeing up $7.5. So the total is roughly $17.5M. Eichel received $9M of that. Dahlin and two other players will come in at roughly $1M each, assuming they're all NHL-ready rookies. So that leaves just $5M to sign Reinhart and zero cap space. Getting Galchenyuk for two years at half price gives the Sabres a lot more leeway and, player-for-player, a pretty fair swap.

Five stars for your persistence and logical comments. As you can see, I am not dismissing this as poor trade, everything indicates it is a very close trade (age, production, cap hit etc.) it may be a great trade for both Galchenyuk and Reinhart. Maybe Alex can get his 30 goal MoJo working again, and maybe Sam can find a center who complements his skills better. At this point keep the devil I know. smile

Thank you for the 5 stars. I know we've focused on the Sabres deal and I am still hopeful there's a way to sweeten our way to it. Assuming all the trades are somewhat in the realm of decent value exchanges, do you have any thoughts you're willing to share on the overall lineup?

Presuming all of the trades are as equal as the Buffalo, then I think MTL is MUCH better. I always thought with a healthy Weber and Price this was a play off team. With the addition of Tavares and Johnson, it is a much better team.

TB, I love the NJ and CGY deals. I think Bennett will find it in a new home and, even if not, the guy can be a prick like Gallagher.

I think the Buffalo deal makes sense, but no point in fighting it. There are similar players you could get for Chucky that will do the job. Or, keep Chucky, sign Perron and dump off Hudon and buyout Alzner. You're welcome....

That's a nice pivot move. Who would you put on Chucky's wing, since he probably won't backcheck.squinty smile

The Sabres are the opposite of a cap strapped team. As of now if the cap goes up by 4M they will have 23M in cap space with 13 roster players. Buying out Zach Bogosian gives BUF 27M. Dahlin, Guhle, Mittelstadt are all impact players on ELCs so that’s 16 contracts with 24M in cap left to sign appx 5-6 players. The Sabres have cap space, that’s not a concern.

Even if we didn’t, BUF could bridge Sam for like 2.5 and then extend once Pominville and Moulson come off the books.thats the value in Reinharts contract vs. Galchenyuk, the Sabres hold all the cards.

Regardless, not happening. Good try tho.
