Deals with MIN and STL

Created by: TML_GM
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 16, 2018
Published: May 16, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The idea is transitioning out of building and into contending by trading some futures for quality youngish assets to contend with. In my opinion, the Leafs need a better backed and a touch of size in order to compete better in the playoffs. These moves attempt to address those issues. They gain size in Coyle, Greenway, and Parayko. The right side of the top 4 improves significantly. There is the hope that Dermott continues to progress and handles the top 4 left side well in Gardiner's absence. I'm not sure how attached to Fabbri STL is after all the injury issues, I am hoping the Leafs can get him and give him to their medical staff to rebuild. His play making abilities in this lineup would have significant potential (if fully healthy).

Even without a Tavares signing, this is still doable if you have Kardi at 2C and use Coyle or Fabbri as your 3C. Leaves more cap space to add another upgrade on the back end or to use on a deadline rental.

I'm interested in hearing feedback from MIN and STL folks on the trades.

So let's say the 1st is for Fabbri. Parayko for Brown, Zaitsev, and Sparks? No thanks. Parayko is entering his prime as a big two-way RHD, he's not available without a serious overpayment and this just isn't it. We don't have anyone in our system ready to fill the gap that Parayko would leave, and I'm not a fan of Zaitsev at all, especially with his contract.

Good to know the value placed on Fabbri from the STL perspective, that isn't what I was thinking. For me, his injury problems lower his value. I would take him out of the deal entirely if required. But it sounds like you want to hold on to Parayko regardless. I had noticed a trend of STL fans trading him on the boards, so I assumed he might be up for grabs. Any other STL fans have opinions?

Fabbri's injuries suck for sure, but I'd prefer to give him a chance rather than sell low on him and get burned. He's only 22, an ACL repair for him (even tho the first surgery failed) is not as risky as it is on a dinosaur like Joe Thornton. And he is a guy with loads of talent who skipped the AHL to play for a playoff team as a teenager. I'd prefer we keep him unless the right offer jumps out. The way I see it, TOR's 1st will be late in the round so we'd be essentially getting our money back.

People on here got on this kick of trading Parayko because he didn't have an amazing year, but even those trade offers were usually based around Nylander. He wouldn't get moved in a package deal, it would have to be for a big name, and I just don't see STL interested in losing a core player on defense when all of our up-and-coming guys play forward.

That's fair and makes sense. I'll start shopping elsewhere for a bargain on a youngish two-way RHD for the top 4.

Really cool idea from a MN fan's perspective. I just think it might be worth separating out to see how you value the pieces and to simplify what is a very complex trade. So for instance if you took out Gardiner from the deal, would you accept us taking out greenway? I think Nylander, Bracco, a 2nd and one of leivo/goat/carrick easily would get you coyle, ennis and dumba. May hinge on whether MN sees willy as a center or not.

Either way nice job

I've always thought that Justin Faulk is a good mix of being both available and highly skilled. CAR has so much depth on the blue line and is going to make some changes. I don't feel like doing a deep analytical dive, but I've always thought that Faulk's two-way game was a bit underrated, and that too many people write him off as an offensive d-man / one-trick pony.

I would say Fabbri for a first isn't out of the realm of possibility. However, I would think it would be conditional. If Fabbri plays so many games it's a first, otherwise it's a 2nd and 4th or something to that nature.

In terms of Parayko, don't see the Blues moving him to Toronto for anything short of Marner or Nylander. Parayko won't fully hit his prime until his age 28 season like most defensemen, but he's already an established top 4 presence with top 2 potential waiting to be unleashed. I would think if there's a move, it'd be something like Marner+Liljegren for Parayko+Thompson(Or Kyrou). Established player + prospect from each side

i definitely view him in that light. He doesn't have speed to make up for mistakes. Very much in the Shattenkirk mold

Like mentioned previously, we just don’t have the blue line depth to trade Parayko. Everyone just jumped on here after missing the playoffs thinking about nothing but adding scoring and getting rid of Allen. We need to keep our D together for any shot of competing until at least the Petro contract is up. Then who knows what will happen. He’s too valuable to us at this point plus I’m scared to death to trade him and see him become a (potential) Norris candidate in 4 years.

As a Wild fan I have absolutely no interest in Gardiner...even if he is a MN kid. He's a great skater...and that's about it! I would love Nylander in a Wild sweater and I would strongly consider moving Dumba to get him...but I would push for the Leafs to take Spurgeon instead. Spurgeon is a much better all-around player - albeit 5 years older and smaller. As young as the Leafs are, they are ready to win right now and Spurgeon would be a better player for them...Dumba is still a work in progress!
Spurgeon and Coyle (Ennis has negative value) for Nylander and and 2 or 3 of those other pieces and you have a deal.
