<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheEarthmaster</b></div><div>Maybe the reason GMs don't want to keep giving up first round picks for rentals is because rentals like that don't ever work. Like literally never. When was the last time a team traded for a high level player or a bunch of high level players at the deadline and then won the cup? Wasn't Columbus, even though sweeping the Lightning was cool. Doesn't look like Taylor Hall is doing much for Arizona this year. Winnipeg did okay with Stastny but didn't make it out of the WCF. Ryan Miller didn't make it through a round with the Blues. San Jose didn't make it past the WCF last year despite adding Nyquist and Karlsson (kinda). Wayne freaking Gretzky was a deadline add and he couldn't help a stacked Blues team win a cup.

Don't spend first round picks on expensive rentals because those rentals are dumb. Spend lower picks to acquire more peripheral assets that might actually help you shore up an area you're weak in. Charlie Coyle. Michael Kempny. It should also be said that we've graduated two/three (depending on if you count Blais) top prospects to the NHL in the last two years, traded Bokk and Thompson, and are close to graduating Kostin, Mikkola, and maybe Perunovich. 2020 is a deep draft. Use the pick to give you a good player on an ELC contract when you inevitably have to trade away people because you're a good team in a cap league.</div></div>

You're preaching to the choir here. I don't want to give up a first rounder.
Honestly, I think both Bokk and Thompson were giant misses by Armstrong at the draft which is why he was fine with parting with those guys. But we do need to replenish our pipeline.
