Description
I think this trade might be more realistic than some may think... On one hand, the Oilers are coming off a down season and management is probably looking to make moves to win games THIS season. Mats Zuccarello/Vlad Namestnikov + Jimmy Vesey should conceivably help them do that more immediately than the 10th overall pick. On the other hand, the Rangers are rebuilding and are looking to acquire lots of good young talent with high upside. And besides, this is Chiarelli we’re dealing with.

Aside from trades, Kovalchuk appears as if he will likely sign with the Rangers and JVR could take a slight discount to come play close to home. The D is still not that good but the forward group should at least keep the NYR competitive while their prospects develop. On a final note, since the Rangers have cap space, I decided to wait to buy out Staal until the next offseason.

    How is signing JVR at 6.5 for the next 4 years "building for the future"?

    Because GM Jeff Gorton has talked about not wanting to completely tank. If the Rangers want a cheaper top 6 option than JVR then go for it, but from his statements it appears as if he wants to continue stockpiling young talent while remaining competitive. There’s no reason they can’t sign JVR and build for the future at the same time if the contract is reasonable.

    JVR is getting 6 years. He won't sign for any less, and I doubt he's gonna want to go to a team that is going to be rebuilding for the first 4 of those years.

    Actually he was a big NYR fan growing up so he’d love coming to the Rangers. Only question is: Is it worth it for the Rangers to sign him?

    It's still a business decision for him, and he's not going to leave 2 years and roughly $14M on the table simply because he was a fan growing up...

    Yeah what you said is right but Shattenkirk took a discount and could’ve gotten longer term but didn’t cuz he wanted to come home so JVR may do so as well. Not saying he will but it’s definiteky a possibility
