Trades

BUF
  1. Darling, Scott ($1,037,500 retained)
  2. McKeown, Roland
  3. 2018 4th round pick (ARI)
Additional Details:
Past Risto the right side looks weak on defense; Bogosian is injury prone and suspect, Antipin looks like he is heading back to Russia, and past that there is only Casey Nelson and Will Borgen (a ways off and no sure thing). I like McKeown, and his addition helps with the lack of options (and futures) on the right side.

Darling can back Ullmark up and provide some veteran-ship and competition. A $3 mil backup is ugly, but the Sabres are compensated for it.
CAR
  1. Lehner, Robin
  2. Moulson, Matt ($2,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Sign and trade.

Although Lehner had an off-year he is a proven starter and will solve their problems in net. The problem of locking up too much money long term in goalies is solved by Darling going the other way (unfeasible for most potential trading partners).

McKeown is the cost of that, but that may be acceptable considering Carolina's D-depth. They don't have to give up a roster player and solve their biggest glaring weakness without breaking their bank.

They also take on the last year of Mouslon. The trade would be done after the signing bonus is paid, so Carolina is only the hook for half of the remaining $2 million salary. Which is not unreasonable.

BUF
  1. 2018 6th round pick (ANA)
ANA
  1. Larsson, Johan
Additional Details:
Any team who wants to take a try on Larsson.
3.
BUF
  1. Burakovsky, André
  2. Orpik, Brooks
Additional Details:
I like what Burakovsky can bring, especially when he pulls everything together.

Loosing McCabe sucks, and makes our D-core a bit too rookie for my liking. Zemgus could use a change of scenery, so it’s not the biggest loss. Orpik’s contract is painful, though we can stomach it for a season.
WSH
  1. Girgensons, Zemgus
  2. McCabe, Jake
Additional Details:
Washington sheds Orpik’s contract, allowing them to re-sign Carlsson. McCabe is solid and cap controlled, and if Kempny is a cap casualty (he earned a contract this season) he will be a good asset for Washington. Zemgus gets a chance to get things going again in a fresh environment.

My impression of carolina is they will be on the cheaper side when it comes to spending. I dont see them giving lehner 4 if they are retaining on darling. A budget conscious team would see that as paying lehner 5 mill for 3 years, which would be a no-go. Also moulson, even at 2.5 is still overpaid as he may not play another nhl game. And on top of that, they are trading a cost contained d man for their troubles. I get what you did, you value lehner as a starter and darling as a problem, you fixed the value by trading moulson as a dump for a young d man, problem is, carolina wouldnt be the team for that. My 2 cents.

Moulson has a cap hit of $2.5 after 50% is retained, but he is only paid (post signing bonus) $2 mil in salary the last year. So Carolina is only paying him $1 mil. I don't think that is an unreasonable ask of them. Obviously if he doesn't start in the NHL (in the lineup or 13th forward) it looks worse for them though.

Carolina's problem is that they need to trade for and then pay a starting goalie while already paying a backup starting wages. This isn't a solve-all, but I think it is a decent solution compared to trading for someone like Grubauer and paying both of them $4 mil (they can't get a cheaper backup). And they don't have to try the backup experiment a third time this way (twice tried, twice failed).

Would definitely be open to what Carolina fans say, but I don't think it's unreasonable on paper.

Edit: Obviously this trade would be contingent on Buffalo being on Darling's trade list or him waiving. I am not concerned with Moulson as I think he would waive to avoid bus'ing it out in the AHL.

I have a feeling Moulson will retire if he is not in the same situation as he was last year(Playing in Ontario). For this reason I usually buy him out or send him to LA and eat half his salary. Its the right thing for LA to do, seeing how we gave them a player free of charge last year, and he didn't hurt the team(18-28-46 in 49 games) I'm leaning towards buying him out though, as I have read that's what is probably going to happen.
