Only comment I will make is they will have another interesting offseason when Schmaltz comes off the books as well as DeBrincat and co. the following year. As well as the fact that the back up goalie situation isn't ideal, but I realize you have to cut in some areas to make others better. I also don't know if you will have that whole cap relief from Hossa.

Hossa will get full cap relief or maybe the Hawks have to eat $170K of it. Next season they will be fine with Schmaltz with plenty of room, but the concern would be in 2 seasons for the 2020/2021 year.

The only trade I really see as an abomination is the Faulk trade. Trading Sikura isn’t a good idea, and I think we would do better with number 4 and 8 than just #2. Don’t get me wrong, Scvechnikov (That’s spelled really bad I know) is a franchise player, but we already have two of those guys in Towes and Kane. I think I’d rather pick up some high quality prospects at 4 & 8 to sustain us for longer than just 1 more winger.

Question for you; do you think the trade with Carolina is fair for both sides as far as purely value?

My thought process is having a replacement for Kane as he hits his 30's in Svechnikov as the Russian kid is a franchise player like Kane is. We don't have that type of player and don't see getting it with the 5th and 8th picks, although we would get two very good prospects but not a franchise player per se in the Elite level. Sikura is going to be good but again not a franchise type of player, likely a B+ to solid A guy like Schmaltz or Cat. With Debrincatt already, Sikura is similar size and playing style. I just think the Hawks have too many smaller fast guys in Hino, Debrincatt, Sikura, Duclair and can afford to lose one for a franchise player that is bigger and more agressive. Can you imagine the future of Cat, Schmaltz and Svechnikov on the same line?

I really can’t see Carolina moving the second overall pick as a starter. I would also argue that we have a couple more years with Kane and Towes before we need to find a franchise player replacement and if we’re really looking to get a good one we might want to tank next year and try to draft Jack Hughes, and then go for it all in the 2020-2025 time frame.

CAR needs a winger and center so with Anisimov and Sikura they get that in addition to the #5 and #8 picks for a team in a rebuild mode...I would argue Sikura #5 and #8 are easily worth the #2 pick given they have Aho as their future franchise player. I think getting Svechinkov now and giving him a couple years in the league will be perfect timing when Kane starts going downhill...another two seasons.
