I wouldn't trade a 2nd rounder for a back up goalie, we have a very competent back up in Georgiev. Why would anyone waste a valuable asset like a 2nd for Mason?

uh cuz they need to dump salary to resign players like trouba and it would get us a really good young player like Morrissey back? Both deals are about getting assets back for taking on bad salary deals from teams in cap trouble...

I mean he was asked if he wanted to be traded before the deadline to a team that could be considered a contender, he said no. Just like Staal, it seems clear he will not waive his NMC and will finish his contract one way or another with the Rangers. Unlike Staal, that makes me very happy.

Also picking up Mason in a salary dump and getting him coached up by Benoit Alliare for 25 starts the first 60 games would probably make him a very appealing trade chip at the 2019 deadline, especially since the Rangers will be willing to retain 50% salary as well.
