Kessel to Minny (MN perspective)

Created by: marmon725
Team: 2018-19 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 19, 2018
Published: Jun. 19, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just wanted to try this from the MN end. I agree with Russo who doesn't see why Kessel would choose to come to the wild with no one to pass him the puck. Staal is a scorer and the fit seems odd with him on the team.

If the Wild want to trade for Kessel, it will likely cost them a 1st, Luke Kunin and Charlie Coyle. Phil Kessel has a great contract, with term left on it. Considering how tough it is to come by offense, his 90+ points this season should provide the Pens with plenty of options, if they chose to trade him.

Just the reverse of the one a pens fan made. I agree MN may need to add but you're not getting a first or Coyle on top, maybe olofsson and a 3rd.

As I said, I don't think the fit is there with a lack of a true distribute on MN's end outside of granlund who plays his position. I just did the reverse of another trade. If they did go for it a hockey trade makes more sense. Potentially even Granlund.

I would think that Minnesota is a player everywhere because of their depth at defense, which most teams need. So, if you got a little creative, and keep caps in mind, I am sure you could figure out a third team to make this all work. I actually think Minny and the Pens line up well, it's just a question of what the Wild are prepared to give up, if they are rebuilding, or if they are just going to reshuffle for another playoff attempt. The direction of this team is still very up in the air.

Agreed. Im hoping a Boston style reshuffle. Need some more draft capital or young guys this year and next, I would think that would mean looking at moving guys like staal, granlund, nino, zucker, coyle. I like the D core but if Dumba could fetch something special or wants a ridiculous cap number move him too. Why do you say MN and PITT line up well?

In the event that Minnesota chose to go for it, as opposed to reshuffling (and with the firing of Chuck Fletcher I really have no idea), the Pens have an excess of what Minnesota really needs and that is a top center. Yes, Eric Staal has played extremely well, and who knows what his new contract will look like. However, if Minnesota really did want to go for it, I think they have the D, prospects and draft picks needed to make a deal for Evgeni Malkin. I am not saying Malkin is going anywhere and there would be plenty of contract shuffling as part of that deal. The Wild D almost automatically makes them a decent to good fit for most of the league.

Kessel's shot is the only thing that gives him the label shooter. I always thought the same thing until I had the privilege of watching him play every night. He is an unbelievable playmaker with a gifted touch as a passer. That's why he works with Geno and not Sid. If I'm Minnesota I look at a line with him Parise (net driver) and Grandlund as a very scary thing. Plus having a RH shot on the power play that is littered with lefties isn't a bad thing either.

Love the idea of him on the PP, and that point does make sense he definitely makes some ridiculous passes. Granlund isn't a center (offside RW primarily) so it would have to be staal coyle mikko(unless our dreams come true and we trade him) or erikkson ek. That or an aquisition. Still like the idea a lot.

Look at it this way. Kessel>Nino, Simon, Sheary, 5th rd pick>Greenway. The pens give up the best and third best players in this trade

You're right, and the gaps between the value in the swaps is not at a Coyle or a 1st level.

Yeah it’s bigger. This trade is hugely lopsided in Minnesota’s favor.
