This would utterly ruin any chance of the Canadiens being good enough to do anything for the next 5-7 years. Statsny is a 2C at best and isn't worth close to that much money, on top of that he's 32 turning 33 and will be a diminishing asset. With Price and Weber over 30 as well you'd have almost 25 million dollars tied up on 3 guys who are past their prime on contracts that can't be traded (No one would ever take on that much money on a diminishing asset.)

Add Alzner the Anchor's contract on top of that and the Canadiens would have 30 million dollars tied up and going no where.

Price and Weber past their prime? I don't think so. 1 bad season and all of a sudden they're done? There's plenty of evidence that players of their calibre at their positions remain effective well into their mid to late thirties. What else should we do to upgrade the center position? We have two solid prospects in the system on their way, which will eventually push Stastny to a more appropriate role. The cap has been steadily increasing so I don't see his contract as being a major nuisance. De Haan is good enough to play with Weber and is only 27 years old. Duclair is only 22 and would be a good low risk/high reward type of move. And for sure we need to be patient and definitely not give up any picks and prospects right now, but we don't have to be an embarrassment again next season either. Given the parity of the league, this roster (if healthy and with everyone performing up to their expected level) would be competitive.

Weber has been on the decline for a couple of seasons. He is losing a step or two and didn't have many to begin with. He'll soon be a guy who has to just sit back and wait for the play to come to him cause he won't be fast enough to chase the play. As for Price, lets just look at a comparable like Lunquist. He's still good and can steal a game or two but he's a shadow of what he was in his early 30's. So yeah Price still has time left but each year will be a little creakier than the year before. Montreal has done a bad job of understanding where the NHL is going. Transformed a decent defence into one that can't skate or move the puck well. (Mete is the only one who can skate well, Petry's not bad either.) Bergevin apparently doesn't like centres to play centre and tries to force the job onto wingers. Its a mess and by the time the guys you drafted this year are ready to play, you are 2-3 years deeper into the Weber and Price contracts (both of which are terrible contracts).

Rip it all down and start over.

Shea Weber last 5 seasons, starting with 17-18:
1) 25:21 TOI, 0.62 pts/gm
2) 25:03 TOI, 0.54 pts/gm
3) 25:22 TOI, 0.65 pts/gm
4) 26:22 TOI, 0.58 pts/gm
5) 26:54 TOI, 0.71 pts/gm

2 gold medals with Canada playing 20+ min/gm.

Carey Price last 5 seasons: .923 combined sv%, good for #1 in the NHL. Also 2 goal medals with Canada as the starting goalie.

I fail to see how these are two players in significant decline...

Well all I'm saying is good luck this year. I am predicting it won't be pretty.

We'll see, summer's not over yet. But I'm just saying Habs don't need to tear it all down, and instead they should build around Weber and Price. Time will tell I guess...
