The columbus connection is a bit wild, but Calvert is the only true ex bluejacket on the roster. Cole was only a deadline pick up for them and the avs apparently have wanted him for years when he was on the Pens.

Right now there is only 1 undersized Dman and thats Girard. I dont think Barrie really is undersized, he pretty normal size, a little small but I wouldnt even call him undersized. Size and heavy hockey is kind of dead, if you have speed and skill you can do well, so you dont have to roll back into Roy era big boy hockey yet

I agree on the Cole signing and the Columbus connection has roots in Assistant GM Chris MacFarland who joined the Avs in 2015, so he and Cole aren't connected. However, in the three years MacFarland has been here, players once in Columbus' system who passed through Colorado include Jan Hejda, Cody Goloubef, Fedor Tyutin, Blake Comeau, Nick Holden and possibly others I'm missing. That's nearly two ex-Jackets per year. Just looks kinda lazy on their part going back to a well that hasn't produced a whole lot.

I also agree on "smaller" defense men being able to thrive in today's NHL much more easily, but if they hold onto Barrie, that will give them three players with similar size/skill sets (Girard being the third) once Makar comes up, and there is still something to be said for having players who can play heavy hockey. Bjugstad fills the second line center role well too.

Oh I know over time they have added so many columbus guys, but this year felt more like they needed guys like Calvert and Cole, so I will give them a pass as it seems more than just a Columbus thing.

Bjugstad is interesting as I think he would be a good target, Friedman sort of mentioned him on his last podcast as a guy teams have been calling about since Florida has so many fwds. Doesnt sound like they are going ot move any of them yet, but I would work on a Bjugstad trade if Jost doesnt look like hes ready for that 2C role this year. Another year or 2 on teh wing wouldnt hurt him
