Regarding the Detroit trade... the value probably isn't terrible, but a rebuilding team should be keeping their 2nds and not trading for a good, not great, 26yo defenseman, IMO. He'd be our best Dman, but isn't good/young enough to trade assets for.

I don't think the Hawks give up Dylan Sikura rn - it'd send a bad message to other NCAA players they drafted. Sikura had the option to go FA ala Kevin Hayes and trusted that the Hawks has his best interests / wanted him, so it would look pretty terrible if they traded him the summer he could have picked to go anywhere if he'd just waited a couple of months. The fact that they already have one NCAA guy who jumped ship, it wouldn't be a good idea to add to that, not when the Hawks draft heavily from NCAA candidates.

The actual idea is sound, though - rentals in the past have been 1st + top prospect. The Hawks don't really have any top 6 quality forward prospects but have a lot of defense that could project top 4. I don't think that's what Carolina wants, though, so I don't know if they're good trading partners. I'm not sure a team in transition will give up a 1st for rental ahead of the season either - more likely to happen at the TDL if the team was in a position to succeed.

Not old, but he's older than the core we're building around. He will likely be past his prime when they're hitting theirs.
