The Rangers' seventh can be omitted and Tampa's fifth upgraded if this isn't enough for NYR.

As much as karlsson would scare me on the roster I honestly wouldn’t mind it as a bruins fan, just because of the cap bind they would be in for years to come. To have almost half the cap locked up in 4 players with plenty of young talent that’ll be looking for pay raises I couldn’t see how the long term success could last unless the younger players all take major pay cuts when it comes to renewals. Imo Tampa’s better off just paying a rather hefty rental price, winning their cup and letting karlsson walk. Obviously there are trades that can be made to free up cap space after this next season but opposing gms could just decline all cap dump deals if they really wanted to screw Tampa over.

Tampa's 1st in 2019 goes to the Rangers if they win the cup. Even if it's moved to 2020 this isn't enough for Karlsson. Also, why would you get rid of Johnson for that little? And also, you'll have cap problems in a year.

If Tampa wins the cup the first will be the Rangers. But Tampa will get their second back. Johnson doesn't have to be traded for so little, but cap space needs to be opened up so if they were in a strait they'd have to sell their most valuable overpaid player, which is Johnson. Ryan could be traded for a similar return which is actually probably the best idea. I think there is a bigger trade market for Johnson than Ryan, however. Tampa regardless is going to have cap problems in a year. It's just a question of whether or not they want a better shot at the cup this year with more complicated cap problems next year.
