Why would Jonson make 3M he hasn’t proven anything and he accept 750k contract. Nylander either gets trade or sign longer deal he has good years with the players he is playing with you going to have to pay him more than Mathews. Or risk losing him for nothing.

I think the Nylander bridge might very real. IMO isn't signing long term. Don't know starting in 2018/19 the Leafs have control or Nylander for at least four years.
Glad you put Marleau in....he isn't going anywhere. Leafs still might have to make a trade for cap space

Matthews would have to score 50/50 and Marner would have to score only 70 points this year for those numbers to be relevant.

Johnsson accepted the 1 year 750k as a bet on himself. Says here that he made a great bet and will likely be the Leafs best left winger before this season is done. I'm high on Nylander and would gladly lock him up long term for 6.5 M+ but the Marleau contract really puts the squeeze on in 2019-20 and something's got to give. If Marleau could be traded we could also take a shot at retaining Gardiner (who I believe is a top 30 Dman).

We have to compare their point totals to a replacement level player's points not 0. As a crude example Matthews 85 pts Marner 65 pts. If a replacement level player (given enough ice time) can score 25 then Matthews is 60 pts better than replacement and Marner is 40 points better. Ratio 60/40=1.5 1.5 x 7Mil = 10.5 Mil. Of course there are other considerations besides raw production.

By the way I think Marner is a special player and that we will soon consider 7Mil (or whatever he gets) a bargain. I don't need to mention Matthew's ability as the Toronto media beats it to death but not even he has the on-ice vision that Marner possesses.

I let him walk to use that money to sign the big three he look better than he is because he playing with The big 4. I would use him on the third line and keep his points down and sign him to less and longer

That's an interesting theory, more applicable to depth players than stars however. If we're looking at points let's at least use known quantities and not random numbers.

Points per game is a common benchmark, as is Mcdavid's 12.5M cap hit, so let's start there and use their first 2 seasons of scoring. We'll divide their ppg rate against Mcdavid's and then divide that number against his cap hit.

Mcdavid 1.17 ppg 12.5M
Matthews .92 ppg 9.83M
Marner .82 ppg 8.74M

This could be considered a high water mark all things considered. Factor in cap space, inflation, add Nylander and the fact that the Leafs are a contender and the Oilers aren't, and the numbers may come in considerably less.

A lot of these threads have a considerable gap between Matthews and Marner but the reality is that their scoring numbers and importance to the team don't support that salary variance.
