This trade makes sense. I like Borgman and think he is going to be a NHLer. From the Leafs view is Bortuzzo and. his one year till UFA better than Carrick/Holl/Ozhignkov guys this year. If Bortuzzo is deemed a one year improvement, I could see the deal happening. Good thought.

Yeah with Gunnarsson and Bouwmeester out the door, Borgman would be a nice 3rd pairing left handed D-Man. Also with Bortuzzo gone, it allows Schmaltz to get the roster spot he deserves. As for the leafs, they could use a good right handed stay at home defenseman.

The only issue I see with this is most of our d prospects are lefties. Mikkola, Walman, Perunovich, Noel. Schmaltz and Reinke are righties. Is Borgman an upgrade over the LHD prospects we currently have? I'd rather keep Bortuzzo cause 1)he's cheap and 2) he's a great fit for 3rd pairing. They both take too many penalties and I just think Bortuzzo is a better fit/need.

Would rather move Schmaltz and get a pick/prospect back.

Schmaltz was drafted the same year as Parayko. look where parayko is and where schmaltz is. you won't get picks/prospects that are good for him.

I dont see us resigning Bortuzzo next year, and I do believe Borgman is an upgrade, at least for the time being.

He hasnt had the right opportunity to make the team with Petro, Shattenkirk, Parayko all on the right side in recent years. He has always been good in the AHL so I think he could fit well on the 3rd pairing.

I guess you're right, but with JBouw and Gunnar gone next season we have empty holes to fill. hopefully they bring up Walman I guess.

I didn't say we'd get good ones. But might as well move him for something.

Thats why we get Borgman and Schmaltz as the 3rd pairing starting next season!

He is a big bodied defender that has a lot of potential upside. He played the first 40ish games for the Leafs on the left side and for the most part looked fairly comfortable. The only downside is that he is still getting comfortable with North American ice. Plus he was also given the rookie of the year in Swedish Elite League.

Unless Rienke is clearly better, I wouldnt give up on Schmaltz
