Brian Maclellan is the worst GM at signing players

Created by: krakowitz

Description
Maclellan’s draft decisions look solid (Vrana, Samsonov, Johansen and Alexeyev), and he’s made solid trades outside of the Shattenkirk deal (Oshie, Kempny), but this dude sucks with the contract aspect of this whole GM thing.

8 years for Oshie is rough. A 5 year commitment for Eller seems like a bit much. Orlov got overpaid in his contract year (but then played well enough this season to justify that contract). And I thought it couldn’t get worse than Brooks Orpik. Well guess what, this is pretty damn close. We’re going to have very little money to resign Burakovsky, Vrana, Stephenson and Djoos next offseason. And we also have no backup goalie. I’m pissed.

Plus Carlson deal would be one of the worst in the league in like 3 or 4 yrs. Eller contract is good at 3.5 for what he brings and you have covered more term with good AAV, but gosh those Oshie, Wilson, Orlov, Carlson deals look really bad..

This year it will most likely be Copley as the backup, at least to start of the year. They want to get Samsonov PT in the AHL. But I'm sure he'll see NHL action this year and he'll be the full time back up next year.

He’s starting the season in Hershey to get more playing time and to adjust to North American hockey, but I’d expect him to be the backup sooner rather than later.

Take a deep breath. Yes the Caps overpaid for Wilson. However, Wilson is trending in the right direction offensively. This could very well end up being an alright deal for Wilson. The Orlov contract is a good contract because he's playing at a very high level, Wilson could very well do the same. Mac is very good at evaluating talent and putting together a winning team. The guy is the architect of the first ever Stanley Cup champion team in the history of the organization.

And I see people complain about the Oshie deal and I get it. It's a long time and he probably won't be worth it at the end. But someone else would have given that to him and the Caps made the right call keeping him. he became an enormous part to the Cup run. Not every contract is going to be pretty when it's first signed. Let's see how this all unfolds this year.
