TB to TB - TBL perspective

Description
Tyson Barrie to Tampa Bay

Im probably going to get a 1 star rating for this but whatever.

Assuming Callahan is willing to waive to go to COL

TB is going to have serious cap issues next summer. i dont think they can be solved without moving a major piece. This deal gives them an additional $3.7M in cap space plus other assets that can be flipped at the trade deadline for more help for tampa's cup run.

By adding Barrie TBL's defense is right up there with NSH for best in the league when healthy. Barrie will only have a cap hit of $2.75M for 2 seasons with salary retention. COL also takes on Callahan's contract to free up space.

I dont know Tampa's depth chart that well so im open to line suggestions also

Oof. This is a problem. I'm a fan of Tampa and I love Point, but that offer really has some potential in it.

Still would say no though. Point leaving would cause a hole in the roster that is nearly impossible to fix. But when it comes to Barrie, the team already have 2 potential d-men to take his role (Sergachev and Foote)

fair enough. but i think it also depends on what Tampa can aquire at the deadline if you use the picks from COL. To fill Brayden's spot TB could probably land Duchene or Stone at the deadline with retained salary if they are also willing to give up one of their D prospects (probably Foote, which they may be willing to do now that they have Barrie).

Biggest difference between Duchene and Point is that Point is a RFA, and Duchene is UFA. If they were to acquire Barrie, they certainly could not afford to re-sign Duchene. But with Point, they have some time to form a deal. He's still on his ELC. He could probably a sign a 3-year bridge deal - Tampa has done it before with many players, Kucherov for example. With Duchene, this is impossible.

I was thinking Duchene would be a 1 year rental. I agree he likely wouldnt resign with Tampa due to cap reasons. but the main advantage of this trade for Tampa wouldn't be for the long term, but instead for the cup run in 2018-2019 as they would be able to add more short term pieces than they otherwise could with the extra $3.7M in cap space.

well someone is going to have to leave. TB cant afford to keep everyone by resigning them at fair market value. they can either make trades to free up space or try to convince players like point to sign bridge deals for low AAV
