Habs in 2 Years

Created by: RoadRunner72
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 12, 2019
Published: Jan. 12, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Skip ahead a couple of years. A lot of key prospects are now between 21 and 24 and playing on the NHL team.

Key moves: Petry traded in June 2019 before draft for Florida's 1st round pick (assume 10th overall). Habs also use their own pick at #13 overall. Draft Lavoie and Broberg.

Jake Gardiner as a UFA summer 2019 to fill the gap at left D while Mete, Broberg, Romanov mature.

As Tatar, Danault and Shaw approach UFA status they are moved for picks or prospects to give younger players more ice time. Gallagher is re-signed long term and remains with the team into his thirties.

Panthers aren’t giving you a first for Petry, they’ll pick Broberg in the draft

If the cap allows it, the Habs would better keep Petry. Just makes for a better team.

I guess you're right - in some ways Habs and Panthers are in the same situation. Might as well keep adding good pieces from the draft and hoping it all comes together 2-3-4 years down the road. Toronto and Tampa are likely untouchable in the Atlantic for a couple more years in any case.

Florida is not the right dance partner for a guy like Petry.

Agreed keeping Petry makes them a better team this year and next, But strategically if the offer was good enough I think they'd be best to sell high. Habs realistic window of opportunity for a decent playoff run is still 2+ years away.
