Moving up the draft and getting elite defensive forwards

Created by: noobmaster69
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 16, 2019

Description
These trades give the leafs a true shut down line that can match up against any teams best line in any situation. They move up in the draft to get a pick in a position they are weak in (LW). Vasili Podkolzin would be a beast along side Matthews and Kapenan getting the pucks out of the corners.

Why does Philly do this? They don't unless Nylander picks his game up for the rest of the season, but Philly is weak at C, and Naz and Nylander could be there 1C and 2C. Philly is no where close to being as deep on forward as the leafs, and I believe that giving up more offensive minded Naz for defensive Cout is a excellent swap because Tor still has plenty of offense without Willy and Naz.

As for Nino, he is a defensive forward, but in Minny they again don't have much offense, so he is also relied on more heavily for offense. In Toronto, he literally would just need to play defensive against top lines so Matthews and Johhny T can go against weaker lines.

Cap that is left used to sign a Veteran D.

Why does Philly give up Couturier who is a legit top 6 center + a top 5 pick for... that?

If you read the description my thoughts are in there. Naz is more offensive than Cout and Nylander (at his normal level), would be there 1 and 2 C, moving Giroux to wing.

So, you haven't seen what couturier has done the last season and a half?

This trade is a joke

But Kadri isn't more offensive, or better. He's got 81 points in his last 125 games. Couturier has 111 in his last 126 games. Couturier is much better and is younger than Kadri.

I would argue that Kadri's stats are skewed being this season due to being on 3rd line and playing with wingers that aren't producing. You put Kadri on the same line as Couturier he would have better numbers. And even still, throughout their careers Kadris is at a 0.63 p/GP and Couturier is at 0.55.

Good argument, so why are you moving Kadri?

Because Couturier is better defensively, and more suited to the 3rd line role in Toronto (given they have enough other scorers), where Kadri would be better in Philly on 1a/1b center role playing with linemates that will allow him to out produce Couturier.

Great, so how are you compensating Philly with the ridiculous 8 million bonus Nylander gets paid on July 1st.
