Description
Plekanec line is used to match up against toughest competition.. plekanec can take left handed draws and backes takes right handed ones. Backes won't be fun for opposing teams star players to play against and carr is a spark plug on that line. Both of them like to crash the net and plekanec likes to put pucks toward the net for tips or rebounds so I could see this line meshing well. If they all get around at least 40 points while shutting down the other teams top guns then they're doing the job. I'm aware paying backes almost 7 mil is an overpayment but that's what free agency is and the deal is only 3 years so the team will be able to resign pacioretty and lehkonen if they choose. In my opinion he is exactly what this team needs, a big physical right handed top 6 who is a great leader and score 20 goals a year. Also, backes can play center so the team then has the option of trading plekanec before his contract expires rather than get nothing for him by losing him to free agency.

3rd line is used as an exploitation line to prey on the other teams bottom 6. Good way to bring lehkonen into the north American game. I expect 35 points per player.

I signed stewart to add more toughness but also because I felt like an injury to gallagher or backes would create a big whole in the line up. If gallagher gets hurt andrighetto gets promoted but then the teams exploitation line is gone unless a player like stewart could slot in there. If backes gets hurt the team has no gritty forwards. Stewart is a great depth addition and will likely sign only a 1 year deal again. I'd like to sign weise but I don't think he is a fit in montreal anymore and he will not be worth the money/term he would want.

Eller will be replaced by danault or mccarron so I think the time to trade him is now to free up cap space for backes and get another good draft pick for this year.

I like the Backes signing, he looks good this year and ill be surprised if he doesn't return to STL. On my team, I would keep Eller and trade Desharnais unless we're getting a roster player in return. Think about the difference between playoff Eller and playoff DD, it's a large gap.

    Thanks for commenting

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you about eller over DD. Eller has never been more than a 30 point guy (except for the lockout year). DD got 3 more points than him in 14 less games this year. Eller didn't get to play centre all year in his natural position which I'll admit he's far better at than wing, but he still saw lots of time with galchenyuk and plekanec this year and only managed 26 points.

DD was having incredible success in a secondary scoring role, but he can't be relied on as a first line centre anymore. Give him talented young wingers who can shoot like lehkonen and andrighetto and I would bet he performs better than Eller would in the same situation.

So to sum things up, not only do I think desharnais is a better player for our team to have (since it needs more offense), I also think eller would fetch a better return because he has 2 years left before he becomes a UFA and there seems be more demand for 6'2" shutdown 3rd line centre rather than 5'7" the 3rd line offensive centre's.

Winnipeg for example needs a shutdown C not a scoring C because they already have little and scheiffle. In montreal we would have plekanec and also backes who could play centre.. both are better off used as shutdown centre's in my opinion which is why I would choose galchenyuk and desharnais as my offensive centre's.

I'll admit though when it comes to playoffs you could be entirely right and I could be entirely wrong. We've never seen DD played in a third line role for playoffs.

I had to go back to 2011 before I found a player drafted 36th Overall who has played an NHL game. I also went all the way back to 2006 or 2007 and i would say eller could easily be traded straight up for any one of those players. A 36th overall pick isnt a guaranteed NHL'r, Eller is an established 3rd line C, definitely worth an early second round pick. I think winnipeg would be a great fit as I mentioned above. Also fellow countryman ehlers plays there. If they don't want to pay the price someone will.

A big overpay for Backes too. He really doesn't want to come to Montreal, and if you do get him, it's only because you've overpaid. I'm sure Winnipeg can find an good 3C for 3.5m and not give up a second rounder.

David Bakes already specified he won't be playing in any canadian team , and i think a early second round pick for Eller is to much , late second round maybe

As I said I know it's an overpayment but that contract on a 3 year deal is not an issue for montreal. A bigger issue would be a deal for 6 million for 4+ years. I still think a 2nd round pick is a fair price for Eller.. weise and fleischmann were able to bring in a 2nd and a 1st round prospect just as rentals. Maybe it's a later 2nd with a different team but a 2nd round pick for sure.

Didn't know backes said that.. I'd still push for him but my back up plans would be okposo or brouwer.
