Note: I rushed the bottom 6 lines and scratches, can replace anyone with a speedy cheap FA (like another Tyler Ennis), change up the lines, etc
So I've been seeing a lot of trade where Kapanen gets dealt for a defensemen. This defensemen usually has 1.5 years on his deal, at which point he will probably leave again as a UFA. Here's why this is different. First, Nurse is young. He can be a leaf for a long time. Second, Nurse would be a RFA after his contract expires, not a UFA. He's similar to Kapanen in terms of contract and skill, with one exception. Nurse contract expires next year, not this year like Kapanen. When we resign Nurse, we will have cap room from Marleau coming off the books!
The Zaitsev trade was complicated. I didn't want to keep him in the top 4, and didn't want him to take playing time away from Liljegren. So I dealt him. It cost us a pick because I didn't want to retain salary and his deal is big. Maybe it won't cost us a 2nd, and if it doesn't I won't complain. But if it comes to it I'm willing to pay it.
I signed Nick Jensen, I think he's a solid top 4 right hand shot.
Notice how Connor Brown still has a roster spot. I'm in the boat that his 2.1 mil is too much to keep on the books for the role he plays. Right now I see now clear better alternatives to overtake him on the roster, as Trevor Moore already has a spot. If we get close to the cap or sign someone to compete with Brown for cheaper, I'm all for trading him for like a 3rd or something like that.
So lets evaluate this team. The top 6 Forwards still look insane. The bottom six is shaky, its in need of a transition specialist to get the puck up the ice. Can acquire through cheap FA (like Ennis) or in a Brown trade.
The defense looks far better than any year past. Jensen has been carrying Kronwall and Dekeyser on Detroit's top pairing, he could thrive beside Dermott. Nurse slots in beside Rielly, and that makes for a great top pairing. Puck movers, defensive responsibility, its got it all. Bottom pair features two puck movers who have question marks in their own zone so I'm open to suggestions to improve this pair.
Goalies stay the same, Freddie and Sparks
Cap wise we sit right below the cap, but if we needed more room (like if Matthews and Marner deals are higher than I project) we can trade Brown to clear room. I only have two scratches because we don't need another Holl (from this year, he plays a bigger role in my projections) taking up 700k in cap room.
The more I think about it, the more I love this team. The only question is, would the Oilers trade Nurse for Kapanen? They need a winger. Oilers fans listening please weigh in, I want to know if this is a legitimate possibility.
Leafs fans, this is far better than any trade I've seen for Muzzin, Pietroangelo, Parayko (love the player, hate that it would cost us Willie), etc, because it isn't a one year thing. Nurse can resign after this deal and be a key contributor for years to come in addition to this season.
Nurse is not going to be moved, so to convince Edmonton you're going to have to blow them away. Kapanen a minor pick and C prospect isn't going to do it. Especially because Kapanen didn't do much until the team was stacked

Fair argument on Kapanen only playing well around others, but I do think he's developed to be good individually as well. Even if not, he's performed outstanding with great C's, and if he moves to EDM he will be playing with McDavid....

Pretend you are Chiarelli, what would the leafs have to trade for Nurse? Kapanen plus what?

I've been saying Nurse straight up for Kapanen for awhile could happen. It makes so much sense for both teams. People can argue the value of each player, but 1 for 1 is the best option. Nurse provides Toronto with a more reliable defensive, physical option. Has some offense but not much. Kapanen provides Edmonton with a speedy winger that can actually play with McDavid, something they've been looking for. People argue that Kapanen's value is overrated and he didn't produce u TIL the team was good, but that just shows that he can play with good players. & if he went to Edmonton, there's no doubt he'd be on McDavid's wing and probably get 60-70 points while being very reliable defensively as well.
Bottom line, 1 for 1 works perfectly for both teams.

I think the "speedy winger for McDavid" thing is way overblown. He is on pace for like 50 goals and 120 pts. They aren't looking to tap more out of him, they're looking to add players to make the team better when he's not on the ice.
That said, I don't think Kapanen is nearly enough for Nurse, nor do I think the Oilers would consider trading him at this stage in his career - he hasn't reached 300 games. Defending in the NHL is hard and it takes time, but Nurse is getting better each year and has plenty of talent to solidify himself as a top defenseman. You can find a guy that produces like Kapanen for much less than that.

Not saying hes not talented btw, just pointing out the optics of it.

It's hard to pretend to be Chiarelli because I feel I'm somewhat competent and the majority of his time in Edmonton I could not comprehend his logic lol

It really doesn't make sense for Edmonton. Toronto fans vastly overvalue Kapanen. He only had 9 points in half a season last year and then magically is on pace for 60 when he plays on the wing of a top 10 center, I wonder where there difference comes from.
You say he could get 60-70 points playing with McDavid, but so could anyone who can stand by the net and keep their stick on the ice.

Nurse is their #1 d. They can't afford to lose value on any more trades. A 1 for 1 for Nylander makes way more sense but Edmonton should still pass. If they're trading any asset they need to address as many holes as possible.

They've said they're looking for wingers that can play. Getting Kapanen makes the team better, yes McDavid might not be able to do much more, but think of his wingers now and how much they lack production. Kapanen would solve that issue that they've been trying to, or if you don't wanna play him with McDavid to "make the whole team better" then play him with Draisaitl who needs to be at 2C for $8.5M. If not him, the RNH.. Kapanen makes sense as a winger for Edmonton in so many ways.
& as for Nurse, he's an average defender, yes it may be improving but he still has his blunder moments. Plus the fact that he has 1.5 years left on his deal and last time he signed a deal there was a big difference in how the Oilers saw him fitting in and how much he wanted, so there very well could be a disagreement again and force Edmonton to trade him.

LOL.. Nylander for Nurse straight up is a garbage offer for Toronto. Nylander gets way more than that.
Nurse may be Edmonton's #1 dman now, but on a good team he's more of a #2 or 3 guy. Plus when Klefbom and Sekera come back Nurse won't be #1 anymore and they'll have replacements for him. And with past contract negotiation complications and Nurse's deal expiring after next year, there could be more. Edmonton would be smart to get what they need for him while they can, and Kapanen is exactly that

Eh, he wasn't the first guy ever to want a long-term deal without enough merit to make it warranted. They gave him a bridge to keep their cap situation under control, and I think they'll figure out what his next deal should be. I'm not an Oilers fan so I don't know exactly what value Nurse has, but I don't think that "getting Kapanen makes the team better" when the cost is Nurse.

Nurse is better than Klefbom already. Kapanen is not exactly that. They can get a lot more for Nurse and spend a lot less on players similar to Kapanen. You're completely underestimating Nurse or you are extremely overvaluing Kapanen

Not only does Kapanen fix a glaring need of Edmonton's at wing, it also helps sort out their defence for next season. Move Nurse and Oilers defence on the left side is virtually unchanged. Klefbom as #1LHD, Sekera as #2LHD, and Russell as #3LHD. Russell isn't the greatest dman, so they could move him out and bring up Caleb Jones (who should be in the NHL already, isn't cause Edmonton's cap is hell). Then your right side is Larsson #1RHD, and they bring up Ethan Bear as another RHD option who should be in the NHL. Then they can sign a veteran or use Russell. Best to move Russell for what they can get. Then they're seeing how the young guys are in the NHL, get a top 6 winger in Kapanen, shed cap space if they move Russell ($4M) and avoid the future headache of contract talks with Nurse again who already didn't see eye to eye with them the first time around.. seems pretty good to me

I absolutely think Kapanen could play very well with a half decent centre on the second line, or excellently with McDavid on the first line. This would allow Draisaitl/RNH to anchor their own lines if Kappy plays with Connor, which helps Oilers when Connor isn't on the ice. Also they aren't looking for players to compliment McDavid, but they are looking for competent players that McDavid can help. McDavid can't do much to help guys like Yamamoto.

Oh I agree, but I don't wanna be misconstrued here - I think Kapanen would be good on EDM, I just don't think Kapanen is worth Nurse. EDM can't afford to swap good NHLers, they need to (opportunistically) add NHLers IMO. Maybe someone like Connor Brown who might be had for a draft pick to free up some cap for TOR.

All yours! I'd do Kappy and Brown for Nurse, you get two wingers (who are probably your two best wingers other than RNH and Draisaitl who probably shouldn't be wingers), we get our defensemen. Is that more to your liking?
