Additional Details:
Deal happens after July 1 bonus is paid. + a pick on either side to make trade fair if necessary but I would do this straight up on the leafs side to get a good RD and save some cap room. Carolina who is cash strapped gets a top c/rw for actual average salary of 4.94 million per year

Can someone please sell me on Pesce? Don't get me wrong..I'd love to have him...but he's a big, 20pt defensive defenceman that plays 2 pairing and we are offering packages on here that are similar to the one's we think Pietrangelo is available for.

Why are we always overpaying to acquire him?

My Opinion:
1) Before Nylander was signed our offense was doing great so we can still be a good team without him. We can have two solid players with his cap hit that we have for another five years.
2) As you said Pesce is a big defensive RD which we are short on. And he is 24, just getting to his best years and under contract for 5 years.
3) Pietrangelo is a great player but at 29 he will not be getting any better and most likely decline in his performance as the years go on. He will only have one year left on his contract and no idea how much it will take to sign him as a free agent for 20-21 season if he even stays. I don't like giving up a lot of assets for the one year and still have cap issues with Nylander's contract.
4) This is a trade that I think can happen. Carolina could use Nylander as a center. Carolina has the cap space and can use a break on the actual salary. Carolina has a lot of good defense and will likely be trading one anyway. And I think the age of the players term works good for both teams - both young players with 5 years left on the contract.
5) I also noted that a pick may be needed as well. Maybe Pesce and a 2nd or 3rd for Nylander

This is certainly just my own opinion here...but a Nylander-Pesce deal screams Hall-Larsson to me..

Given Hall > Nylander and Larsson > Pesce...

Looking at the trade by itself then maybe. But if we keep Nylander we have to find 3 mill cap space so who goes. Brown and Kapenan. 5 mil cap next year less 2 mil for the 1 mil each replacements. So the deal is more like Nylander for Pesce plus keeping other assets.
