Is much better in my opinion... if you’r going to Put Dermott on the top pair.

I know everybody says it's too risky, but give M n' M a 5 year deal which will knock maybe 2 million dollars off the 8 year deal. Chi did this with Kane/Toews, Tbay did it with Stamkos, all three got cheaper 5 year deals to help keep their teams in Cup contention and all 3 players didn't leave as UFA and signed 8 year deals afterall. Scary thought after seeing John T screw the NYI but this idea can and has worked. Marner loves the Leafs, he'll do a 5 yr than a 8 yr to keep the Leafs in Cup contention, it's only the American Matthews you'll have to worry about taking the early UFA status to go back home. Nylander (if not traded away by than) will be UFA and I highly doubt he'll keep loyal to the Leafs.

Agreed. Im not entirely sure why the majority of us assume that an 8yr deal is what will happen, that its in the best interest of both player and team, or that it hasn't been proven successful before to sign star rfas to 5/6 yr deals
