Marleau Gets Orpiked

Description
This is by far the most fun I have had putting together one of these things. Here's what I did.

Start by resigning everyone. Key players I signed were Marner, Kappy, Johnsson. I'm honestly really tired fighting about their numbers. Give them and extra 250k, take 250k off it, doesn't matter to me. Then comes the big changer....

Marleau wants to play in Toronto so he won't get traded. I also don't think he will retire, and LTIR probably isn't an option. Ottawa on the other hand needs to take on big contracts to meet the cap floor, because in this scenario Stone, Duchene, and Dzingel leave. In this case Ottawa trades for Marleau and buys him out. He counts for 6.5 mil against their cap, getting them to the floor. They only have to pay him 1.5 mil in actual dollars so that satisfies the penny-pincher Melnyk. The leafs then resign Marleau for 1 mil to keep a decent 3rd liner (and more importantly a great locker room leader and dressing room guy). Saves the leafs 5.5 mil in cap space.

To open up more room, Brown gets dealt for a pick. I chose Vancouver because of the Leivo connection, but honestly pick a team and this trade works. Zaitsev gets dealt too. I gave up Bracco as a sweetener to take on the deal. I don't know if that will be necessary, but I'm open to dealing him with Zaitsev if it means we get a pick back in the deal.

Lastly we sign FA's. I'm anti-Gardiner not just because of his mis-jakes but because I think he always looks lost in D Zone and can't move people in front of his own net. Dermott is waiting in the wings to take his spot. Zaitsev's departure leaves a huge hole on the right side. I signed Jensen (leaves DET to go to a contender) and Stralman (also wants a contender, TBL can't afford to pay him with their cap situation). I gave them 3.5 mil each. I have no clue what their actual market value is, so this is a pure guess.

This team looks insane. Defense is ready to produce. The forwards don't change, deadly as always. Kappy and Johnsson don't get dealt. Goalies stay the same. This team is basically this years team with Jensen and Stralman replacing Hainsey Zaitsev, a HUGE improvement. This is easily a cup contender. LOVE THIS TEAM!

I see this a lot but no one ever has an answer to this question....

Why does Ottawa buy out a 35+ contract?

2 reasons:

1) They meet the salary cap floor. Assuming Stone/Duchene/Dzingel walk, they need to acquire big contracts to meet the floor. This allows them to do it without spending a lot of cash, only 1.5 mil in cash, and the 6.5 in cap price gets them to the floor

2) We are paying them to do it. They aren't gonna use that cap space for anything in a rebuild anyways. Accumulate picks, draft young players, get the rebuild going right.

You didn’t answer my Question, why do they buy the contract out? Why do they not just keep marleau? What possible benefit is there of buying him out if they still get the same cap hit?

In all of the scenarios where this happens, that's a point I never really considered. Why would Ottawa, New Jersey, Arizona not play the first ballot HHOF and have him as a locker room presence just like the leafs did? What did Washington do to convince Colorado?

They included Philipp Grubauer in the trade who at the time looked like a real promising goalie. Grubauer had never played the role of starter but his lowest season sv% was 0.915 including one year 24 games played 0.926 sv% and 35 games played 0.923 sv%. They thought they had someone who could handle the ice time for when Varlamov inevitably gets injured.

Part if the trade. Sens send Leafs a 1st rounder that only conveys if they don't buy out Marleau

That is called collusion... you just effed the Leafs.

This is why marleau can’t be orpik’d. The nhl investigated caps and Avs and there was no proof of collusion. With marleau there is no benefit to a buyout what so ever.

If they got away with this O would be happy but very surprised.

It is not collusion, because the Sens do not HAVE to buyout Marleau. They just lose their first if they do (they'll buy out Marleau). Not collusion.
