Cap space

Created by: phillyflu
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 3, 2019
Published: Apr. 3, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Cap will go up marginally, preliminary reports having it going up to around $81 mil (could be more).
Without unloading anyone off the roster; will surely make a trade or 2, won’t get good value though due to other teams knowing their cap issues, not bringing back any UFA, and paying projected real market for the RFA players who played significant games in the NHL this past year.

Hate when people use the stupid argument "won't get good value in trades because teams know their cap issues". That's so wrong. you still get good value because you get 2-10 teams who want the same player off the Leafs. So their offers have to compete with each other. Unless Kyle Dubas turns into a total moron over night he'll get fair value for anyone he has to trade. Take Kapanen for example, if the Leafs are forced to trade him how many teams are going to make offers on him? could be 3 could be as many as 10+. So they'd easily get fair value because those teams need to offer something better than the other teams to get him. Saying that they'll get undervalued in trades because of cap issues is such an illogical and ridiculous statement made by so many Leaf haters on this site. So frustrated with the lack of competency here.

I think you slightly over paid oz. I think you significantly overpaid marner. Until an RFA winger off his ELC not named Ovechkin gets more than Tarasenko's 7.5 million I don't see an argument for significantly over 9.

Put another way if marner is getting 11 is Rantanen getting 11.5? Is point getting 12.5?

It is logical and happens regularly. Because leafs fans over value anyone that wears wears the jersey doesn’t mean that rival gms aren’t savvy. Easy to say all leaf haters are out to ridicule you. You assuming all your players are sought after, and assuming there will be all these bidding wars. Use a little bit of logic and think like a rival gm, not a homer who thinks the leafs are God’s gift to the NHL. Triggered and going nuts over a website is what’s idiotic.
Not to mention, look at some of the trades and signing done by leafs fans, talk about idiotic and ridiculous.

Possibly overpaid a bitter Oz, but Marners numbers are statistically better then Matthews, and he got over $11 coming off his ELC. I get he’s the face of the franchise, but players are gonna get paid. Yeah, Point and Rantanen could be getting into that range as well, salaries don’t go down.

Marners numbers are not statistically better.

He is a year ahead in his career.

Matthews has a higher ppg. An astronomically higher gpg

Marner has a slightly higher ppg than Matthews this year but his line mate is a top 10 forward in the league.

Marner has been healthier than Matthews and produced better in last year's playoffs (Matthews produced better in the playoffs the year before).

Matthews has been literally the 2nd or 3rd best goal scorer in the league since entering the league in draft +1

Marner entered the league in draft+2 and his first two years was a very good player but no where near franchise. He did take off in his third year but he was playing with the guy who is 4th in goals and 7th in points in the last 6 years (Tavares).
