New GM Bites The Bullet

Created by: PakNation7
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 4, 2019
Published: Apr. 4, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Room for one or both Tyler Benson and Cooper Marody to make the team.

Edmonton native Taylor Fedun is signed as a serviceable stopgap until Bouchard or Bear are ready for NHL duty. If one already is at the start of next season Fedun can be the 7th D and Persson can be sent to the AHL. Not to mention Fedun has some decent stats in a sheltered role for both Dallas and Buffalo the past couple years.

Former Devils goaltender Keith Kinkaid is brought in to challenge Koskinen as the stater. This year aside, as the Devils as a whole have been bad, Kinkaid has been a pretty solid goaltender. Most notably last year when he went 26-10-3 while Schneider was out. He should come cheap especially since he has not played since the deadline for Columbus. Kinkaid, I can imagine, will be hungry to prove he deserves to play and what better chance to do that than in Edmonton.

Both Brandon Pirri and Brett Connolly are signed to form a new look second line with Nugent-Hopkins. They should add much needed depth, skill and goal scoring ability to a team who currently has Lucic, Kassian and Rattie in their top 6.

In the Alexander Wennberg trade Columbus looks to shed some salary while also replenishing the exodus of picks they sacrificed at the deadline. Wennberg has not really lived up to the contact he signed after scoring nearly 60 points in 2016-17 and has fallen behind Dubois, Jenner and potentially Duchene on the depth chart. This makes for an expensive 4C. Despite this he still has good possession stats and would add much needed skill and ability as Edmonton's 3C.

In the Connor Brown trade both teams address a need. Edmonton, skilled wingers and Toronto, RHD. Both players still have untapped potential which could benefit both teams.

In the Montreal trade, Edmonton is simply looking to shed salary. Montreal currently runs out the LD of Mete, Kulak and Benn. Nothing to call home about. With the expensive price tag and long term commitments required for UFAs, Montreal, who have the 7th lowest cap hit take a flyer on Kris Russell.

I actually really like this! Trades are pretty fair, may have to add a little more to entice MTL to take Russell but pretty close. Forward signings are good as well. The only other thing is I think Persson would be able to fill in as a decent stop-gap instead of Fedun. Cheaper as well.

Couple things:

1. Solid job on the logic really enjoy a AGM thats well thought out
2. I wouldnt buyout Manning as it provides minimal savings this upcoming season and adds an $600K the following season. minor detail but not a deal breaker
3. Brown takes more than Benning straight up, likely a mid range pick or prospect (Dubas loves keeping the cupboard full)
4. Russell has a NMC and i know for certainty the 10 teams he will accept a trade to will all be west based teams proximity to home is important for him

I would much rather Fedun (proven NHL player) versus Persson who hasnt played a pro game in North America yet

My guess is that DAL will re-sign Fedun.

Other than that and the Russell trade, I actually think this is pretty good. Brown for Benning straight up also won't be happening, EDM needs to add picks.

Is Wennberg availible for a 2nd and 3rd? Solid gamble if accurate. Although I may not agree with the practice.. the oil would have Bear / Bouchard / Perrson playing on the third pairing RD with Sek playing with Nurse on the second pair before Fedun ever came back to Edmonton to play 2nd pair minutes.
