Nill brings in Nash

Created by: lukeg
Team: 2016-17 Dallas Stars
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 4, 2016

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Nill says no buyouts for Lethonen/Niemi unfortunately to start the season.

With Lindell coming up and Shore/Dickinson knocking on the door, getting trade value for Eakin and Nemeth now makes sense instead of potentially losing Eakin for nothing in the expansion draft. Rangers essentially get Eakin, Nemeth, Bystrom (throw in low end prospect), and a 2nd rounder for Nash (retained salary could be less). They also flip Hellberg from giving away a 2017 6th round for him into a 2016 5th rounder.

Cap is ok long term for Benn contract, RFA signings, and expansion draft. Nill brings in AHL goalies (Hellberg and McCollum) in case one of them excels and/or he trades Lehtonen/Niemi during the season.

Rangers fan here, not a bad trade. Rangers have several Cs with Step,Brass,Hayes,Lindberg and possibly Miller but I think he's better on wing. If Eakin were to come to NY, would have to move 1 or 2 Cs since he'd be 3rd C. Also, D wise, need more RHD help then LHD

The question is could you find a better winger than Nash for 5m a year and not give up all those assets? Most people would say yes.

Nash could bring in more than that. Easily. It's basically Nash with a significant amount retained for Eakin and a 2nd. Nemeth won't be anything, Bystrom doesn't play here and the 5th is nothing. Horrible trade.

Nash could get NYR more in a trade, but might be tough to take back players with significant salary cap hits for a player like Nash that is past his prime. Both Nemeth and Bystrom were drafted in the 2nd round and both have been stuck in a backlog behind top talent like Klingberg, Johns, Lindell, Honka, etc. Not going to say either is a game changer; not going to say either is incapable of making an impact on a lower pairing. One of our young RHD and/or Nichushkin would be good trade pieces; doubt we would get rid of them though for Nash.

If Nill sticks with Lehtonen/Niemi, something has to change and Nash could help that being a two-way player and decent on the PK bridging the gap for 1-2 years. Nill could probably find another option than Nash although I don't think it would be smart to sign a player (even if it's less than $5M) to a longer term with the expansion draft coming up and a lot of young players ready to come up in the next 1-3 years.
