So hear me out. As poorly as Gaudreau played, and as many turnovers as he had during the playoffs, I actually don't think that he was the team's biggest problem. His line couldn't keep up with him, nobody he played with created anything for him (except for maybe Bennett), and the rest of the team didn't play good enough defense to give Gaudreau any opportunities.

As much as I like him, I think Monahan may fit better on a different team. Despite their points together in the regular season, I'm not sure that he and Gaudreau are natural fits for each other. Monahan just doesn't have the same speed, nor the necessary space-creating ability. Considering this, I think it would be wise if Calgary listened to offers on him, and traded him to a centre-needy team (like NJ or CBJ) while his value is at its peak. Ideally, the piece coming back will fit a bit better with Gaudreau to give him some more time and space.

As for Backlund, I like him too, but I think Calgary has got other similar players (Jankowski, Ryan, Dubé) that can do just as good as a job for a cheaper price. Trade him to acquire a creative player to play alongside Johnny.

Gaudreau is this team's most skilled player. Management would be wise to not trade him, but instead, put his creativity and speed to good use by building around him. Especially in today's NHL.
