Description
Supposedly you've got Perreault, Trouba, and Ehlers as potential trade pieces (per Friedman's 31 Thoughts)... soooo let's make a wild swing!

I know it looks like a "add it all up until the value is even" kind of trade from the DC side, but there is actual logic behind it. This all assumes that WPG moves on from Trouba, as well.
1. Niskanen is a veteran blueliner on a similar contract to Trouba's expiring one, and should fit for now, with Johansen to serve as the long-term replacement.
2. Perreault-for-Eller is a fairly even move with cap savings for WPG.
3. Moving Ehlers is further cap savings, and in return are (the rights to) a top-6 winger and a 2nd round pick. A sign-and-trade might be necessary, but the move itself is the same.

Ultimately, WPG gets cap savings and security that they apparently want without a big drop in talent, plus the futures in Johansen and the 2nd. The Caps get a bump in forward talent, clear out some blueline glut, and are back up against it with the cap as a result.

Would LOVE if this happened but feel like WPG could find more value in moving out Ehlers.

Honestly, I would be happy to bump that 2nd to a 1st and maybe get back a later round pick or mid-level prospect. I remember crossing my fingers and toes hoping Ehlers would somehow fall to the Caps in that draft. Thankfully it ended up being a monster draft and we got Vrana four picks later, but still....
