Retooling to try to get back to the playoffs

Created by: JayTea

Description
Since Craig Leipold seems intent on seeing this team get back to the playoffs, these are some moves I could see them making to try to get there.

This assumes of course that Pavelski makes it to free agency and Koivu starts the season on IR. I think the Wild end up extending Spurgeon this summer unless an offer blows them away (e.g. Nylander 1 for 1). He's too important to the team to lose him on a bad trade.

Values might be a bit off on the contracts or trades, but with extra picks and ~$7.9m in cap space don't get too hung up on if a deal is slightly off.

I got into this with a Leafs fan and I felt like I was pounding my head against a brick wall...but, I happen to think Greenway has more value than Kapanen...and I'm a big fan of Kapanen. I would say the picks should be swapped around here. Toronto's 1st and the Wild's 2nd.

Personally I think it should be a 1 for 1 swap due to team needs, but I also think Granlund’s return should have been Fiala and a pick and we both know how that turned out..

Think the Leafs need cap space, so the difference between Kapanen and Greenway isn't that much. Want a right hand shot, I'd trade Nylander for little or no cap in return. So if it's for Kunin and pick, heck the best offer might be for Minni's !st pick.
Plus, I'd try Nylander at centre.

Greenway +what gets the Wild Nylander? Kunin is off limits.

Greenway and second rounder is the best the Leafs would get....I'm in.

Give me your honest assessment of Nylander’s current game, his floor, and his ceiling.

Hi Bassman. It's been so cool/cold don't know if the warm weather fish are ever to spawn this year.
Nylander: Nylander was dreadful last year. Lack of intensity, his shooting accuracy was way off. So to think what his game is going to be is really a dilemma even for his coaches.
He ceiling a 2nd, maybe even a 1st line winger. 30g 50a. HIs floor, just another guy on the third line..13, 20a., maybe his best time my be as PP specialist. His 6.96 is too high., unless he becomes near the player he should be. His 4.9m annual cash payout is probably about right.
Leaf need about 7m in cap space, so I've been a proponent of no cap returned to the Leaf trade. So I don't think the Leafs are going to get "playing" value for a good Nylander. But that's the price you pay when you overpay the current Nylander, your star Matthews and sign a 11m UFA Tavares.
Due to cap reasons the Leafs just can't wait for Nylander to play to his potential. So IMO the Leafs are auction this summer to trade Nylander. Greenway and a second might be the best offer the Leafs get. But if the offer was two seconds....I could see that also.
If possible get Nylander back from Sweden and have work under his NHL staff during the summer. Maybe the switch to centre, and those skills needed to work on as well as his shooting. Not that many Leaf fans agree with me and Nylander seems to be their golden boy. Not me, I don't think he will ever be star with the Leafs, he needs to a trade to shake him up, to man him up.
