Detroit trades a 2nd this year and retains 1.25M in Helm's salary for a 2021 3rd round pick? Huh? They would just waive him and let another team take him rather than trade higher assets for lower ones. If that didn't work, they would bury the contact in the AHL and get $1,075,000 in salary cap relief until his contract is up and free up the roster spot. Also Helm's NTC may be voided between June 15, 2019 & 2019-20 NHL Trade deadline, if player is not in the Top 9 F in TOI, or if team does not qualify for the playoffs. The 2nd condition was met so Detroit can void his NTC on June 15, 2019.
Beyond that the Wings aren't buying out Justin Abdelkader (for at least 2 more years) as they have the cap space to keep him and re-sign their RFA's.
Rasmussen will be in the AHL as he needs more TOI and no longer has Jr transfer issues that kept him in the NHL last year. Svechnikov was on IR all last year so he gains another year of waiver exemptions meaning he'll be in the AHL too. Zadina might make the team out of camp, but it's probably a safer bet that he continues in the AHL and is the first call up for an injury to a forward.
