2019-20 fantasy roster Kapanen for Larsson

Description
Note: I highly disagree with the idea of trading Adam Larsson, this is something that Toronto fans / media speculate on frequently so I thought I'd see how it could play out for Edmonton. Larsson was a beast in the playoffs the only time we made it, seems to me the Leafs need this sort of player.

I've clearly overpaid Stralman, he didn't have a great year last season but I need to convince him to come to Edmonton on a 1-year term, so the money is warrented IMO. Stralman is a clear downgrade defensively, but I'm hoping to land an upgrade next summer in the form of Alex Pietrangelo. I'll post next year's mock later.

I've picked up Burakovsky on a few of my AGM's, as mentioned below I don't think this exact trade would work but I think both players have similar value. Basically Benning leaves and Bura arrives with no other roster players involved - the picks/prospects acquired for Benning will roughly equate to the picks/prospects sent to Washington. If Burakovsky won't sign for less than the $3.25M QO, two thing happen: we send less to Washington in the trade, and we extend the term. Sounds counter-intuitive I know, but if he's going to get the opportunity to play with McDavid I'm not offering a 1-year contract just to go through the hassle (never mind the inevitable raise) next summer. It's either a $2M x 2 deal or $3.25M x 4.

I realise that Washington has no need for Benning, but I believe the two players have similar value so I'm showing the roster switch as one transaction for simplicity.

Brown not worth a 2nd to me rather keep puck 38 then him I'd give a 3rd or 4th but 2nd is to rich

That would be cool, but I expect he'll be looking for a multi-year deal just due to his age. We may have to pay up to convince him to take a 1-year deal. That said, I wouldn't be averse to giving him $4M x 2, as long as there is no NMC / NTC clauses for the 2nd year.

Ha ha, yup. that third line is a difficult one for the coming year. But they'd likely get easier minutes. Also, if Benson doesn't work out on the 2nd line RNH could slide into 2LW pretty easily.

For 2020-21 however, the third line takes on a new dimension altogether: I will post that AGM this morning. The idea is to go from 1 scoring line last year to 2 next year to 3 scoring lines the year following.

I agree with this take. Toronto is in cap hell and Brown is under-performing his contract and he doesn't have any trade protection. I'd offer a 4th and that's it. Pretty sure Dubas would take it - path of least resistance and all that.

I'm surprised Toronto fans haven't commented on the Larsson - Kapanen swap.

Just saw it, so I'll comment. Leafs likely wouldn't be doing two years of Larsson for five controllable years of Kapanen straight up, and you want the Leafs throw in a first. The trade is about cap neutral so the Leafs especially can't do the deal. Despite all the Oiler/Leafs trades on this site, the teams aren't really a good fit. Leafs have to shed cap and Oilers really can't take much more cap in any trade with their cap issues.

Oilers don't have cap issues. This very AGM is proof of that.

And the Leafs just gave up a 1st + an A-level RHD prospect + an NHL-ready 21-year-old forward for a 1.33 years of a left-shooting defender which they have plenty of. That's 7+ controllable years x 3.

I don't think this is ridiculous value.
