Pure speculation - Carolina Florida

Created by: bishopsdad
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 30, 2019
Published: May 30, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Habs have 3 holes. Top 6 RW, top 2 LHD, 1B goalie.

The idea is to fill these holes on the cheap because in a couple years the Habs are gonna have massive bills to pay 2 seasons out.

Carolina gets a young forward in return for a defenceman that seems to have been passed by. Offsetting picks based on performance seem warranted. I've put Fleury on the 2nd pairing for now but I suspect he might move up.

Florida gets someone who can potentially back up any back up goalies they might acquire as UFAs - this makes sense only if Luongo is ready to retire - for cheaper than Reimer and gets a pick because while Lingren's NHL numbers are better than his AHL numbers, it's a bit of a gamble. JR becomes UFA the same year that the Habs have new contracts to deal with. The big incentive for Florida is the extra cap space - I could be talked into sending something/else in lieu of Lingren.

I took the number for Eberle from Evolving Warfare's spreadsheet and added a bit to account for Canadian taxes.

Seems very reasonable for CF, it's likely the Hurricanes do something like this, cool proposal.

I just picked two guys with skills who seem like they could use a change of scenery.

I'm not sold on Fleury being a top 4 for us anytime soon so I would pass for that reason alone. Plus he isn't the type of dman the Habs really need. Yes he is a LHD but he is nowhere near the puck moving PP quarterback type dman. More a stay at home with better offensive upside than standard stay at homes dmen. Decent stats in junior but not an offensive catalyst really. I'd say the Habs should be more interested in Bean than Fleury if we're looking to add a budding LHD dman

Chances are Fleury would play bottom pairing with Juulsen or Folin while Mete plays with Weber and Kulak and Petry are paired again. Essentially what he's doing in Carolina and he isn;t really taking steps forward. Fleury isn't the right fit IMO.

As for Reimer, I've been a proponent of adding him to a Habs trade as he would be a decent backup but that was done with the thought process of adding another asset on top of him. Reimer shouldn't be the main target because you can get an equally good goalie in free agency without losing an asset. He should be the "add on" to relieve Florida of some extra cap (They're speculated to want to go in on Bob and Panarin) and bring down the cost of the other asset in the trade. i:e Matheson, Yandle, etc (whomever).

Hey Marco, how much more do you think it would cost to get Bean?

Fleury being a top 4 .

Fleury had been playing well for the Hurricanes all season in limited ice time, and his underlying numbers were strong. In more ice time with the Checkers he's been downright dominant. I think he's ready for top-4 duty on most teams that don't have Slavin Pesce Faulk Hamilton as their top 4, but won't be waiver-eligible next season and the Hurricanes trade him for those reasons. Bean is on year 2 of his ELC, no reason to move him.
