With Marleau gone

Description
Marleau- I think you need to add at least this to get him moved and be willing to take money back. In an ideal world he retires and you can trade his cap hit, but I don't see that happening. The fact that I chose Arizona is somewhat irrelevant, as LA, Anaheim and Colorado have also been discussed, I bet the deal has a similar framework.

Zaitsev- I don't think an easy fit is found without a team wanting Toronto to retain. They absolutely CAN NOT do that, so he stays and maybe they try to work out a deadline deal or one next summer. With the cap continuing to climb, his deal is more manageable every year. I think there are a few fits for him out there ( Dallas, Van, LA, NJ) but that is a tough deal to put together.

Hamonic is my ideal D partner for Rielly. With Calgary looking to move salary he is a potential trade target (especially with the good young cheap D they have). One of those 2nd's could be a conditional first based on resigning him (which I would try very hard to do).

The UFA signing can easily be buried if another Marlie shows they are ready to make the jump to the NHL or Petan could win a job in the lineup as well.

Left wing is a weakness but I think you need to include Johnsson or Kappy to get a D and I'd rather trade Johnsson. This can be addressed in the future but I'd rather have a weakness at LW than RD.

I had forgotten his contract was on LTIR with the Coyotes. I am sure if Arizona wanted the Leafs would LTIR him and save the Yotes some cash. Might help them pay less?

Marleau trade: Possibly, but not for Richardson who had more goals than Marleau last year. Also adding Hossa does nothing for them. They're only keeping him for his cap hit. Not for his salary paid which is peanuts for them. Insurance pays the bulk of the actual dollars to Hossa.

I was under that assumption, but obviously that option would be on the table is the Coyotes wanted it. Richardson was just an expiring contract so I put him in, not sure if Arizona would want some cash moved in this deal, but he seemed the best option.

The idea is fine, the execution doesn't quite make sense. (If I were Chayka for example)

Its basically an math equation.

Marleau+assets for (player significantly worse and cheaper than Marleau)

If the player in return is just as good as Marleau (or atleast within the realm of it) , the benefit here doesn't quite add up. It should be TO downgrading Marleau in talent + cap hit saved in exchange for assets + better player in Marleau but more expensive.

That's how I would deal with it if I was Chayka or any other GM adding Marleau.

While I don't disagree that he's a useful player, Marleau's cap hit is probably 4m too high. If it was 2mil, this probably wouldn't even be a conversation. The Leafs will have to include assets to move him, of that I have no doubt, it's just a question of how much and what are they forced to take back.

That's why LA is a bad fit, the contracts they have to unload or even worse then Marleau's, so there's little value for the Leafs.
