I think the trade straight up of Smith and an NYR 3rd for Hanzel is fair, so in taking the very valuable condition of a 2020 1st as the cost to re-sign zucc off the table, the value shifts to the Rangers getting a future 3rd. Dallas wants to re-sign Zucc and keep there pick, Rangers want to get rid a Smith.

yeah i think you're discounting how much MORE valuable a 2020 1st. They don't equate. I think the trade works without the condition...

Also you can drop Vesey from the Toronto trade and make that 2nd round pick SIGNIFICANTLY lower on the Tampa deal...

I would do the trade if Zucc does not re sign you're losing out on a first round pick that could be valuable if Stars do bad next year

I mean yes that would change things. I just dont think they are gonna give up the 2020 1st. So its an expiring leverage situation. Lets say they have made the decision they want Zucc but not enough to give up the 1st round pick. If they stand pat the Rangers get nothing added, just keep the 2020 3rd. In this situation they recoup something in getting 100% relief of the Smith deal in return for an injured player with no cap implications.

I dont think the Stars would give us a 3rd to take Hanzel and then take Smith. I think we would have to sweeten that deal for them.
